The Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Technical Underwriter to join our Excess Liability Division. This position serves as a subject matter expert for complex excess and umbrella underwriting risks, providing technical guidance, referral authority, quality oversight, and underwriting support to field underwriters across the organization.

This role is ideal for an experienced excess and umbrella underwriter who enjoys solving complex underwriting issues, influencing underwriting strategy, and partnering with underwriters and leadership to drive profitable growth. Unlike a production underwriting position, this role focuses on technical expertise, underwriting quality, compliance, and risk management rather than building an individual book of business. The role emphasizes oversight, referral management, underwriting discipline, audits, regulatory compliance, and support of field underwriting teams.

Great American's culture is built on connection, shared learning, and strong relationships. To support this, employees in this role are expected to be on-site, in either the Cincinnati, OH or Marietta, GA office, four days a week, with the flexibility to work one day remotely. Core in-office days are Tuesday through Thursday, with the fourth day determined by business needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical underwriting resource for field underwriters and branch offices.
  • Review and respond to underwriting referrals involving complex risks, coverage considerations, pricing challenges, and exceptions to guidelines.
  • Provide clear approval recommendations, underwriting rationale, and documentation of decisions.
  • Partner with underwriting leadership to promote consistent underwriting practices and profitable growth.
  • Analyze complex casualty exposures, including auto liability, general liability, umbrella, and excess liability risks.
  • Maintain and communicate underwriting guidelines, best practices, and product knowledge.
  • Support quality assurance initiatives through file reviews and underwriting audits.
  • Assist with SOX compliance activities and ensure adherence to regulatory and company requirements.
  • Collaborate with Legal, Compliance, Product Management, Claims, and Actuarial teams on underwriting and regulatory matters.
  • Support the development and enhancement of underwriting processes and tools.
  • Travel occasionally (less than 10%) for audits, training, and business meetings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Risk Management, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • Generally, 10+ years of commercial casualty underwriting experience, including significant experience with Excess Liability and Umbrella business.
  • Strong technical underwriting expertise with the ability to evaluate complex casualty risks and apply sound underwriting judgment.
  • Experience handling underwriting referrals, authority-based review functions, and providing guidance on complex underwriting issues.
  • Working knowledge of underwriting guidelines, regulatory compliance, audits, and quality review processes.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to influence decisions through technical expertise and collaboration.
  • Experience with casualty reinsurance is preferred; CPCU, ARM, or other professional insurance designations are a plus.
