This role requires a strong understanding of financial analysis, accounting, business operations, credit risk, and financial statements. The Senior Underwriter will analyze borrower financials, evaluate business performance and repayment capacity, assess collateral, support loan structuring and credit decisions, and communicate directly with business owners.
The ideal candidate brings substantial experience in commercial/small business lending, credit analysis, transaction advisory, corporate finance, or a closely related financial services environment, combined with strong analytical and leadership capabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyze and underwrite new small business and commercial loan opportunities.
- Evaluate borrower financial statements, cash flow, profitability, liquidity, leverage, and overall financial health.
- Underwrite and evaluate financing opportunities generally ranging from $500K to $10M.
- Analyze business operations, industry conditions, management, and other factors affecting credit risk.
- Evaluate non-real-estate collateral, including its value, liquidity, and relevance to the overall credit decision.
- Support the structuring of term loans, including loan amount, repayment terms, and other appropriate conditions.
- Oversee and review credit analysis prepared by other team members.
- Develop clear financial and credit analyses to support underwriting recommendations.
- Monitor existing loans and identify changes in borrower performance or risk.
- Communicate directly with business owners to understand their financial position, business prospects, and financing needs.
- Explain financial and credit considerations clearly to internal stakeholders and clients.
- Manage multiple underwriting assignments while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
- Lead, mentor, and develop members of the credit/underwriting team.
- Contribute to improving underwriting processes, analysis, and documentation.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in small business/commercial lending, credit, underwriting, transaction advisory, corporate finance, or a closely related field.
- 3 years of experience making, evaluating, or underwriting loans/financing between $500K and $10M.
- Experience evaluating non-real-estate collateral or business assets in connection with financing or credit decisions.
- Experience extending, evaluating, or structuring term loans/financing arrangements.
- Strong experience in credit analysis, financial analysis, and underwriting.
- Experience in team management or leadership experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or a related field.
- Experience in commercial lending, specialty lending, insurance agency financing, or financial services.
- Experience with small and middle-market businesses.
- Transaction advisory, financial due diligence, valuation, or corporate finance experience.
- Experience working with US-based clients or counterparties.
- Experience with Salesforce or similar CRM systems.
- Strong understanding of financial statements and accounting principles.
- Advanced analytical and financial modeling capabilities.
- Ability to communicate financial findings and recommendations to business owners and senior stakeholders.
- Strong business judgment, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.
