Senior/Staff Software Engineer Proposed start date: 1/1/2026 Reporting to: VP, Engineering Work location: Remote/WFH; New York, NY; South Florida Employment type: Full-time employee About the Company The Public Interest Company is a comprehensive solution for identifying and recovering third party liability for health plans, risk-bearing provider groups, and self-funded employers. We combine AI and a legal tech platform to identify and recover claims that should have been paid by third party payers. We handle the entire recovery process, all while protecting members and streamlining operations. We empower healthcare organizations to maximize their financial performance, and recoup dollars towards care delivery, without adding administrative burden. Role Overview The Senior/Staff Software Engineer will design, build, and scale the core systems that power our claims identification, case management, and recovery workflows. This is a high-ownership role focused on solving complex engineering problems in a data-heavy, highly regulated environment. You will architect and maintain production systems, integrate AI and workflow automation, and collaborate across product, engineering, and data science to deliver secure, resilient, and efficient platforms. Responsibilities Design and implement backend services, APIs, and orchestration workflows that support claim identification, case routing, and operational processes. Build scalable systems that interface with AI/ML models, legal datasets, and large volumes of transactional and healthcare data. Develop durable, fault-tolerant workflows using Temporal and related tooling. Create clean, maintainable, and high-performance code using Python (FastAPI) and TypeScript (Next.js). Maintain and optimize cloud infrastructure in AWS, leveraging ECS, RDS (Postgres), Redis, and secure deployment pipelines. Collaborate with product and business stakeholders to translate operational needs into engineering solutions. Uphold engineering best practices, including testing, documentation, version control, and code review. Explore and evaluate new technologies that improve reliability or efficiency while maintaining simplicity and alignment with core engineering principles. Qualifications 5+ years of experience in software engineering, ideally in backend or full-stack roles (title level flexible based on experience). Strong proficiency in Python and experience with modern web frameworks (FastAPI, Django, Flask, etc.). Experience building and maintaining production systems in cloud environments (AWS preferred). Familiarity with distributed systems, workflow orchestration, and event-driven architectures. Ability to design and implement reliable, maintainable, and secure systems in a fast-paced startup environment. Strong communication and collaboration skills, with comfort interacting directly with product and business teams. Preference for practical problem-solving and simple, elegant technical solutions.
