The opportunity

We’re looking for an SME Underwriter who enjoys trading in the market, building meaningful broker relationships and turning quality opportunities into sustainable portfolio growth.

You’ll have the autonomy to make sound underwriting decisions, engage brokers proactively and influence new business and renewal outcomes. This is an opportunity for an underwriter who wants to do more than respond to referrals and is motivated by taking ownership, finding solutions and delivering results.

It’s an exciting time. We’re building momentum towards our vision to become the most consistent and innovative risk partner.

What if you could have a positive impact - at work and in the world? As part of the QBE team, you’ll get to spend every day working with people who are passionate, talented and kind.

Your new role:

In this role, you will:

  • Seek out and convert quality new business opportunities within QBE’s appetite.
  • Engage early on priority renewals to strengthen retention and broker confidence.
  • Develop broker relationships through regular outbound contact, market visits and purposeful trading conversations.
  • Apply technical expertise and commercial judgement to achieve the right balance between growth, pricing, risk and profitability.
  • Use market and portfolio insights to focus your effort where it can make the greatest difference.
  • Provide brokers with prompt, clear decisions and practical, appetite-aligned solutions.
  • Take ownership from first contact through to decision, follow-up and outcome.
  • Maintain strong underwriting discipline, governance and documentation.

About You

You will have:

  • SME, Business Package or Commercial Underwriting experience.
  • Strong risk assessment, pricing and technical underwriting capability.
  • The confidence to initiate broker conversations and actively pursue opportunities.
  • Strong communication, negotiation and relationship-management skills.
  • Commercial curiosity and an interest in understanding what drives portfolio performance.
  • A responsive and accountable approach, with a strong focus on follow-through.
  • The ability to balance broker and customer needs with sustainable underwriting outcomes.

Benefits

We offer a range of benefits to help provide holistic support for your work life, whatever your circumstances. As a QBE employee you will have access to and benefit from:

  • Hybrid working - a mix of working from home and in the office to support work/life balance
  • Free holistic wellbeing coaching, nutritional support, confidential counselling, financial and legal advice
  • 18 weeks' gender-equal flexible leave for all new parents, including paid superannuation
