Overview
The Yale School of Medicine Social Media Manager will be responsible for managing and advancing the Yale School of Medicine’s and Yale Medicine’s flagship social media channels to enhance visibility and reputation of YSM’s research and education programs and initiatives. This includes content curation and development, social listening and issue flagging, community development, and analytics and reporting.


  • Monitoring, updating, and building social media content for all social media channels managed by the YSM Office of Communications
  • Creating and executing a comprehensive social media strategy to amplify reach, user engagement, and reciprocity throughout the Yale community, including the YSM departments and faculty, the University, and other professional schools
  • Curating and developing content for the school’s social media accounts; ensuring that all social media posts adhere to best practices and institutional editorial guidance
  • Collaborating with editorial and marketing colleagues both in the central communications office and communications officers throughout the school to elevate content strategy and production and ensure consistency of message across all communications channels
  • Developing and tracking analytics for key KPIs, including Altmetric points, refining strategies and content; preparing a monthly YSM social media dashboard and weekly manager reports
  • Monitoring social media feeds for negative comments and enacting an effective communications response strategy
  • Collaborating with and serving as a resource for YSM department communications officers and social media managers
  • Developing and maintaining policies and guidelines for the school’s social media platforms
  • Acting as lead social media resource for YSM; Keeping on top of relevant trends, changes in platform policies, and best practices; proactively communicating information to editorial team and communications officers; conducting training sessions for new account holders
  • Attending social media training sessions with the University social media lead
  • Creating engaging and accurate social media content that adheres to both AP Style and YSM style
  • Taking a video-first approach to social media

Essential Duties:


  • Develops and manages forward-focused strategic social media communications to enhance YSM’s reputation and drive website traffic, locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Closely monitors YSM’s social media channels and mentions of YSM on other accounts, using effective industry-standard techniques to mitigate reputational damage as needed and while working with appropriate stakeholders. This may involve daily monitoring or awareness of the social feeds’ comments and DMs on weekends.
  • Produces content for social media. Identifies relevant topics and chooses compelling visual elements to create compelling posts.
  • Works with communications colleagues throughout the school and university to highlight the work of faculty and students to create a high-profile presence and reach new audiences.
  • Builds relationships with faculty, administrators, departments, and social media experts at media outlets and professional organizations; maintains contact with key communications professionals internally and externally.
  • Closely monitors trending topics. Posts relevant content in real time to boost awareness of YSM research, education, and clinical advances.
  • Conceptualizes and writes creative posts across all social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Bluesky, TikTok, and other future accounts.
  • Participates in regular editorial/content meetings and proposes ways social media can support the office’s communications efforts.
  • Uses metrics to determine the most effective posting schedule to increase followers and likes but also nimbly adjusts posting when warranted to respond to in-the-moment topics, cautiously and in keeping with institutional priorities.
  • Quickly develops deep familiarity of YSM content both past and current and leverages that content effectively.
  • Monitors social media for breaking news and journalists’ media requests that the team can act upon.
  • Works on various audience development efforts as assigned, including but not limited to working on amplifying new YSM research through social media, peer institutions, professional organizations, and trade or consumer media.
  • Shoots and edits video for social media purposes.
  • Creates content in the appropriate tone for the medical school and its medical practice that is relevant and interesting on social media.
  • Maintains an up-to-date list of the social media accounts in the YSM ecosystem.
  • Monitors social media for reputational issues and raises them appropriately in a timely manner.
  • Designs accurately branded graphics for social media.
  • Metrics-minded with the ability to track post-performance and social media trends.
  • Team player who stays up to date on social media platform changes and updates and meets the moment with flexibility and fresh ideas.
  • Supports the media relations team as assigned by interacting with media partners when needed.



Required Skills and Abilities
1. Significant ability with, or very strong interest in, science and medicine content. Ability to develop relationships with faculty and other stakeholders to manage YSM’s social media platforms and help grow followers. Position requires regular attendance at on-campus events.

2. Knowledge/ability with computers and relevant software applications pertinent to online publishing and social media, including scheduling and social listening tools as well as Canva and Adobe Creative Cloud.

3. Excellent writing and communication skills with a keen eye for grammatical errors or confusing text. Outstanding organizational skills and very detail-oriented

4. Understanding of web structure, web best practices, web usability, and fluency with online technology, specifically social media management systems and a history of successful, metrics-proven social media posting and management of accounts.

5. Proficiency with maintaining web content, content management systems and HTML editing tools, social media platforms, survey building tools, and Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to identify and learn new technology.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

1. Three years of experience in website editing and/or social media strategy/implementation and success. Experience with social media in a medical/academic setting with multiple stakeholders.

2. Two years of experience in health/science writing, social media, digital journalism (e.g., video, audio blogging, etc.) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

3. Health-related editorial experience.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Coordinating, curating and managing the workflow for respective Yale School of Medicine social media feeds (including editorial output matrices and publishing calendars) to maintain a steady stream of relevant, engaging conversations across multiple platforms, with an emphasis on Facebook and Twitter.
2. Developing respective Yale School of Medicine policies and Identifying best practices and new paths of engagement for targeted users, establishing tone and voice, and crafting content strategies for social platform engagement.
3. Monitoring social media feeds, leveraging positive feedback for amplification and managing negative feedback.
4. Creation and cultivation of strategy to amplify reach, using engagement and reciprocity throughout the Yale community, including the University, Yale New Haven Health and respective Yale School of Medicine departments and physicians.
5. In the digital marketing realm, defining agenda for collection of data to understand multiplatform content consumption, user behavior, and staff performance and priorities, developing policies and driving recommendations and actionable insights to grow traffic, deepen engagement, improve product and work more efficiently.
6. Setting and delivering key media performance indicators (KPI) for traffic and engagement goals across YSM’s websites, social media channels — Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn — and partner platforms. Metrics include earned, organic and paid reach.
7. Building and maintaining effective dashboards and templated reports for leadership, as well as to colleagues, stakeholders and clients, and serving as the primary source of contact for all analytics stakeholders to ensure accuracy and consistency of metrics reported.
