Company Description Middlesbrough Council serves a vibrant town that is proud of its heritage and focused on shaping a fairer and more prosperous future. The Council is driving over £600 million of investment to promote economic growth and strengthen Middlesbrough’s position as a regional and national destination of choice. Alongside economic development, the Council is committed to social regeneration, working with partners to reduce inequality and improve life chances for residents. Its work is guided by the Mayor’s Vision of a Fairer, Safer, Stronger Middlesbrough, with a culture that empowers staff to make decisions and take responsibility. Middlesbrough Council values modern working practices, strong communication, and staff who bring passion, integrity, and commitment to public service.

Role Description This is a full-time hybrid Social Worker role based in the United Kingdom, with a mix of on-site work within Middlesbrough and some work from home. The Social Worker will assess the needs of children, adults, and families, developing and delivering care and support plans that promote safety, wellbeing, and independence. Daily responsibilities include undertaking statutory assessments, managing a caseload, coordinating multi-agency support, and maintaining accurate and timely case records. The role involves direct work with individuals and communities, safeguarding responsibilities, attending meetings and case conferences, and contributing to care planning and reviews. The Social Worker will work closely with colleagues across health, education, and voluntary sectors, advocating for service users and supporting the Council’s wider social regeneration and inclusion objectives.

Qualifications

  • Recognized social work qualification (e.g., BA/BSc or MA in Social Work) and registration or eligibility for registration with the relevant UK regulatory body (such as Social Work England).
  • Experience in statutory social work practice, including assessment, care planning, case management, and safeguarding within children’s or adults’ services.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build trust, work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams, and engage effectively with diverse communities.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant legislation, guidance, and policies (e.g., Care Act, Children Act, safeguarding frameworks) and an understanding of strengths-based and person-centered practice.
  • Ability to use professional judgment in complex situations, manage competing priorities, and maintain accurate digital records and reports.
  • Commitment to anti-discriminatory practice, equality, and inclusion, with a focus on improving life chances and reducing inequalities across Middlesbrough.
  • Proficiency with common IT systems and case management software, and willingness to adapt to modern, flexible, and hybrid working practices.
  • Beneficial: Experience working in local authority settings, knowledge of community resources, and a valid driving license or ability to travel across the local area when required.
