Software Developer (Ruby on Rails)

Ruby on Rails Developer | Remote, Portugal

We're partnering with an education organisation that is rethinking how learning is delivered, with a focus on flexibility for the student. They need a developer to join their technology team and improve the platforms that students, partners and staff rely on every day.

Location: Candidates must live in Portugal and have the right to work here without sponsorship.

The role

You'll be responsible for building and improving internal and learner-facing web applications. Day to day, you will:

• Build and maintain Rails applications, with interactive front-end features in Stimulus.js
• Create and support REST APIs and integrations between systems
• Manage and extend the organisation's Moodle LMS
• Connect internal tools with Microsoft 365, including Teams
• Work in a Docker, PostgreSQL and GitHub environment with CI/CD pipelines
• Spot weaknesses in existing systems and propose practical, scalable fixes
• Collaborate with non-technical colleagues to turn their needs into working solutions

What you bring

• Resident in Portugal with full work authorisation
• 2+ years building web applications professionally, including hands-on Rails
• Front-end experience with Stimulus.js or a comparable JS framework
• A track record with REST APIs and system integrations
• Solid SQL skills; PostgreSQL preferred
• Comfort with Git/GitHub and team-based development
• Some exposure to Docker or similar containerised setups
• Sound knowledge of testing, debugging, architecture and good engineering practice
• Analytical, self-directed, and able to juggle priorities
• Fluent professional English, written and spoken

Nice to have

• Moodle administration, customisation or development
• Microsoft 365 / Teams integration experience
• CI/CD and deployment know-how
• Background in EdTech, learning platforms or SaaS
• Experience improving long-running systems as well as building new features

You don't need to tick every box. Strong fundamentals, curiosity and problem-solving matter more than a perfect stack match.
