The impact you will have in this role:
As a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), you will be part of a business-aligned development squad responsible for building, enhancing, and maintaining high-quality software solutions.
This role combines software development and test engineering, with a strong emphasis on Core Java programming, technical problem-solving, and automation development. You will design and develop scalable automated testing solutions across UI, API, and backend systems while applying software engineering principles to improve quality, reliability, and testability.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on Java programmer who can independently write, debug, and maintain code and apply those development skills to build robust, scalable, and maintainable test automation solutions.
Your Primary Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain Java-based test automation frameworks and solutions across UI, API, and backend applications.
- Write clean, reusable, and maintainable Java code using object-oriented programming principles and software engineering best practices.
- Solve programming and technical problems using Core Java, appropriate data structures, fundamental algorithms, and object-oriented design principles.
- Develop automated tests using technologies such as Selenium, TestNG, JUnit, and Rest Assured.
- Build scalable UI automation solutions using design patterns such as the Page Object Model (POM).
- Develop API automation and validate RESTful services using Rest Assured or similar technologies.
- Perform backend and database validation using SQL, JDBC, and relational databases.
- Debug application and automation code to identify defects, test failures, and underlying root causes.
- Develop and optimize complex SQL queries for data validation and backend testing.
- Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines using technologies such as Jenkins, CloudBees, Bitbucket, and Git.
- Contribute to automated testing across integration, API, functional, regression, smoke, and end-to-end testing while partnering with developers to strengthen unit-test coverage.
- Apply Test-Driven Development (TDD) and Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) practices where appropriate.
- Collaborate with software developers, product owners, and engineering teams throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies, code reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.
**NOTE: The Primary Responsibilities of this role are not limited to the details above. **
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience in Software Development Engineering in Test, test automation engineering, software development, or a related technical discipline.
- Significant hands-on experience developing automation solutions and frameworks using Java.
- Experience testing complex enterprise applications across UI, API, and backend layers.
Talent Needed for Success
- Strong hands-on Core Java programming skills, with the ability to independently write, debug, and explain Java code.
- Strong understanding and practical application of Core Java concepts, including:
- Object-oriented programming principles, including inheritance, polymorphism, abstraction, and encapsulation
- Collections, data structures, and fundamental algorithms
- Exception handling
- Strings and common data-manipulation techniques
- Streams and Lambda expressions
- Multithreading and concurrency
- Reusable and maintainable code design
- Strong programming and problem-solving skills, with the ability to apply data structures and fundamental algorithms to practical coding challenges.
- Hands-on experience designing, developing, and enhancing Java-based test automation frameworks, rather than solely executing or maintaining existing automated test suites.
- Experience with Selenium, TestNG, JUnit, or comparable Java-based automation technologies.
- Strong experience with API testing and automation using Rest Assured or similar technologies.
- Experience with Maven or Gradle and dependency management.
- Strong SQL skills with experience performing backend and data validation against relational databases such as Oracle, DB2, or Snowflake.
- Experience using JDBC or similar database connectivity technologies for backend data validation.
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and working with technologies such as Jenkins, CloudBees, Bitbucket, and Git.
- Understanding of TDD, BDD, and modern software testing practices.
- Strong debugging, analytical, and root-cause analysis skills.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively within an Agile development team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with AWS or another cloud environment.
- Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience with performance testing tools such as JMeter.
- Experience working in Agile and DevOps environments.
- Experience supporting applications within financial services or another regulated enterprise environment.
