JobSummary:
The Manager, Software Development leads the engineering team responsible for development of Nationwide Marketing Group's digital advertising platform, and shares engineering delivery leadership for OneShop, NMG's flagship e-commerce platform. The role also leads NMG's software quality assurance team and practices. This role is accountable for translating business objectives into scalable technical execution, ensuring engineering teams deliver secure, reliable, and high-performing software that supports enterprise growth and member success.
Operating within a fast-paced product engineering environment, the Manager, Software Development partners closely with Product Management, Performance Marketing and Digital Advertising Advisors, DevOps, QA, and Architecture to align technical delivery with business priorities. The role establishes operational discipline across Agile execution, software delivery practices, and engineering standards while enabling teams to deliver with predictability and quality.
This position serves as both a people leader and delivery owner, building high-performing engineering teams, strengthening execution systems, and ensuring scalable platform capabilities that support long-term growth of the OneShop ecosystem, including digital advertising and quality engineering.
Job Responsibilities:
- Leads and develops the digital advertising engineering team and full-stack engineers supporting OneShop delivery, establishing clear performance expectations, accountability structures, and career development pathways.
- Owns production support, roadmap delivery and technical direction for the digital advertising platform, a Java-based application on AWS (Elasticsearch, Redis/ElastiCache, S3) that publishes vendor-promotion and always-on campaigns to Google Ads and Meta.
- Plans and leads recurring third-party platform upgrades, including Google Ads API, Meta Marketing and Graph API, Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager changes, and keeps platform frameworks and security libraries current.
- Partners with Performance Marketing, Digital Advertising Advisors and Product to prioritize advertising capabilities such as campaign publishing, conversion tracking, reporting and new advertising channels.
- Shares delivery responsibility for OneShop initiatives with OneShop engineering leadership, including integrations between OneShop retailer sites and digital advertising such as product feeds, landing pages and Google Shopping.
- Translates business and product requirements into executable technical delivery plans in partnership with Product, Architecture, DevOps, and QA.
- Drives predictable delivery through effective sprint planning, backlog management, dependency coordination, and Agile execution discipline.
- Establishes and reinforces engineering standards across CI/CD, code quality, testing, observability, and release management practices.
- Leads software quality assurance people and processes, including test strategy, automated end-to-end and regression testing (e.g., Playwright), visual regression, accessibility (WCAG/ADA) and performance testing, and release quality gates.
- Leads platform reliability, scalability, performance, and security improvements to support enterprise-grade e-commerce operations.
- Builds and maintains operational rhythms that improve transparency, execution consistency, and cross-team alignment.
- Reduces single points of failure through documentation, cross-training and production-support coverage plans, so critical platform knowledge is shared across the team.
- Manages work across distributed teams, including offshore and contractor partners, across multiple time zones.
- Removes delivery blockers, clarifies priorities, and balances engineering capacity across competing initiatives.
- Develops engineering talent through coaching, performance management, feedback cycles, and structured development planning.
- Partners with technical leadership to guide architectural decisions and ensure alignment with long-term platform strategy.
- Drives continuous improvement across the software development lifecycle, identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency, quality, and scalability.
- Facilitates cross-functional collaboration to ensure alignment between engineering execution and business outcomes.
- Maintains awareness of emerging technologies and engineering practices, integrating relevant innovations into delivery practices where appropriate.
- Champions responsible use of AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate delivery, testing and modernization.
Job Competencies:
- Engineering Delivery Leadership: Ensures consistent, high-quality software delivery through structured Agile execution, planning discipline, and accountability frameworks.
- Organizational Systems Thinking: Aligns engineering workflows, platform architecture, and delivery processes into scalable systems that support long-term product growth.
- Talent Development & Engineering Leadership: Builds and develops engineering teams through coaching, performance management, and structured career development practices.

- Quality Engineering Leadership: Builds a quality culture and test automation practices that catch defects before release and keep regression coverage aligned with business-critical flows.
- Stakeholder Consultation & Collaboration: Partners effectively with Product, DevOps, QA, and Architecture to translate business goals into technical execution plans.
- Digital Advertising Domain Knowledge: Understands digital advertising concepts (campaigns, budgets, bidding, conversion tracking, attribution) and how they connect to retailer e-commerce sites.
- Problem Solving & Decision Making: Resolves technical and delivery challenges by balancing trade-offs across speed, quality, risk, and scalability.
- Process Governance & Standardization: Implements consistent engineering practices that improve predictability, quality, and cross-team alignment.
- Strategic Technical Leadership: Applies strong technical understanding to guide engineering decisions and align platform evolution with business strategy.
- Planning & Priority Management: Manages competing priorities across teams while maintaining focus on delivery commitments and organizational objectives.
- Continuous Improvement Leadership: Drives enhancements in engineering processes, team performance, and platform capabilities through iterative refinement.

- Experience with distributed, high-availability systems, including container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes, GKE), serverless or edge computing, and running Elasticsearch and Redis in production.
- Familiarity with security, accessibility and performance standards, including PCI compliance, secure coding, WCAG/ADA and performance testing.
- Contributions to open-source software or engineering communities.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering and testing productivity.
