Position Summary:
Are you ready for your code to have a real-world impact? We are seeking a Software Engineer to join the OpenUtilities sisNET team. sisNET is a GIS solution that utilities use to document, plan, and operate their electricity, gas, water, and telecommunications networks. Built on Bentley’s MicroStation platform with an Oracle database, it combines a native C++ core, a C#/.NET application layer, web-based information portals, and integrations with enterprise systems such as SAP and ProjectWise. The successful candidate will contribute to the design, development, testing, and maintenance of this mature, business-critical product, working closely with product management, quality assurance, and fellow engineers in an agile environment.
About OpenUtilities:
At Bentley, the OpenUtilities team builds software that powers the world's essential utility infrastructure. We help organizations that provide electricity, gas, water, and wastewater services design and manage complex networks through intelligent engineering applications, digital twins, and modern cloud technologies. Our mission is to help utility companies make better decisions, improve operational efficiency, and deliver reliable services to the communities they serve. As part of the team, you'll contribute to products that have a real-world impact on critical infrastructure used by millions of people every day.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, test, and maintain features across sisNET’s native C/C++ core and its C#/.NET application layer.
- Develop functionality on Bentley’s MicroStation platform, including network editing, topology, and spatial data processing tools.
- Implement and optimize Oracle-based data access for network topology, geometry, and attribute data.
- Build and extend integrations with enterprise systems (e.g., SAP, Bentley ProjectWise) and data exchange using tools such as FME and GDAL.
- Maintain and enhance sisIMS, the ASP.NET-based web portal for network information services.
- Troubleshoot and resolve defects and performance issues, including customer-reported issues, across native, managed, and database layers.
- Drive product modernization: adoption of new MicroStation/PowerPlatform releases, increased automated test coverage, and improved Azure DevOps build and release pipelines.
- Contribute to AI-assisted capabilities, such as the Python-based MCP server that makes sisNET network data available to AI assistants.
- Participate in code reviews, write clear technical documentation, and share knowledge within the team.
Qualifications:
- undefined
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3+ years of professional experience developing software in C++ and/or C#/.NET – ideally both, or strong in one with the motivation to learn the other.
- Solid understanding of object-oriented design and software engineering principles, and the ability to understand and safely evolve a large, mature codebase.
- Experience with relational databases and SQL (Oracle preferred).
- Experience developing Windows applications with Visual Studio, including debugging native and managed code.
- Experience working with source control systems such as Git.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to code quality, data integrity, and maintainability.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, Agile development environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
It would be awesome if you have:
- Experience developing on CAD or GIS platforms, ideally Bentley MicroStation (MDL or PowerPlatform SDK).
- Knowledge of GIS concepts such as coordinate systems, spatial data, and network topology; experience with Oracle Spatial, FME, or GDAL.
- Experience with native/managed interoperability (C++/CLI, P/Invoke, COM).
- Web development experience with ASP.NET (Web Forms, web services) and JavaScript, e.g., OpenLayers.
- Python experience, ideally including native bindings (pybind11) or AI/LLM integrations such as the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
- Experience integrating enterprise systems such as SAP or document management systems such as ProjectWise.
- Familiarity with Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines, automated testing (e.g., NUnit), and Windows installer technologies (WiX).
- Knowledge of the utility domain (electricity, gas, water, or telecommunications networks).
- German language skills are beneficial, as many sisNET’s customers are in Germany and much of its domain terminology and documentation is in German, but they are not required for success in this role.
Please note if you are employed full-time, the salary for this position ranges from 3500 EUR gross (before taxes-Lithuania) depending on knowledge and experience.
If you are ready to take your development skills to the next level and be part of a team that is shaping the future of software, we want to hear from you! Apply now and embark on an exciting journey with Bentley!
