Why Join ORC?
The Right Work. The Right People. The Right Culture.
Right of Way is where infrastructure meets innovation—shaping roads, utilities, and communities for the future. At ORC, we offer more than a job—we offer purpose, stability, and growth. You’ll join a team that values collaboration, workplace flexibility, and long-term opportunity.

The Role
We’re looking for a hands-on Software Engineer to help design and build applications, data solutions, and AI-enabled capabilities that solve meaningful business problems. You’ll bring software development skills and experience or familiarity with Document AI, data warehousing, and modern data technologies.

You’ll work directly with business stakeholders to understand their workflows and challenges, partner with the Software Development Manager to determine the right technical approach, then build, implement, and improve the solution. You’ll report to the Software Development Manager, who sets technical direction and architecture.

This is primarily a hands-on engineering role: approximately 80% of your time will focus on development, with the remainder spent collaborating with stakeholders and contributing to solution design.

What You’ll Do
  • Design, develop, test, and implement software applications and technical solutions that address business needs.
  • Help design, build, and implement Document AI capabilities, contributing to pilots and broader rollout.
  • Design and develop data solutions involving warehouses, pipelines, integrations, and data shared across enterprise systems.
  • Work with business stakeholders and end users to understand workflows, pain points, and requirements.
  • Build, support, and improve solutions from development through production, with growing ownership over time.
  • Develop and maintain data transformations, integrations, and pipelines using SQL, dbt, Snowflake, APIs, and related tools and concepts.
  • Build applications and supporting services that bring data, automation, and AI capabilities into practical business workflows.
  • Identify opportunities to apply Document AI and automation to business workflows.
  • Contribute to technical design decisions with scalability, maintainability, security, reliability, and cost in mind.
  • Use prototypes and pilots to validate solutions before broader rollout.
  • Maintain software quality through testing, documentation, code review, source control, deployment practices, monitoring, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis.
What You’ll Bring
  • 3–5 years of professional software development experience, with strong hands-on coding skills and experience delivering production software.
  • Experience designing, building, and implementing software solutions through production deployment and ongoing improvement.
  • Experience with Document AI, intelligent document processing, OCR, data warehousing, or closely related technologies.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience working with relational data.
  • Experience or familiarity with Snowflake, dbt, data pipelines, data transformation, and data integration.
  • Experience designing or integrating APIs and connecting applications with systems and data sources.
  • Experience contributing to a small or collaborative engineering team and delivering solutions from design through implementation.
  • Experience working directly with business stakeholders or end users to translate needs into effective technical solutions.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, ask thoughtful questions, evaluate approaches, and move work forward.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical decisions to technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and electronic databases.
  • An iOS or Android smartphone capable of accessing ORC systems.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Angular, TypeScript, Node.js, or comparable application-development technologies.
  • Experience building AI/ML or LLM-enabled application features.
  • Experience in right-of-way, utilities, infrastructure, real estate, or professional services.
What Success Looks Like
  • Develop a strong understanding of ORC’s business, systems, data, users, and operational workflows.
  • Contribute to designing and building ORC’s Document AI pilots and supporting their rollout.
  • Contribute to data warehousing, pipelines, and integration across systems.
  • Grow into owning technical solutions with increasing independence.
  • Build trusted relationships with stakeholders and turn their challenges into practical, maintainable software.
  • Deliver reliable software and data solutions that solve validated problems and are adopted by their users.
  • Build sound technical judgment about when to build, integrate, or automate.
  • Contribute to a small engineering team through ownership, clear communication, and hands-on delivery.
