Build the software behind large-scale battery storage

Solar and wind power are not always available when we need electricity. Large-scale battery storage helps by storing electricity when supply is abundant and releasing it when demand rises. This keeps the grid flexible and reduces reliance on fossil fuels.

But how do you connect a battery site of hundreds of megawatts to a central IT platform? And how do you build software that is ready for the projects still to come? As a Software Engineer at GIGA Storage, these are the challenges you will work on.

About GIGA Storage

Founded in 2018, we are an international scale-up growing across the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Our purpose, ‘Unlock every Green Watt’, is about making the energy system better and more affordable for future generations. We aim to have 1.5 to 2 GW of battery power operational by 2030. At 2 GW, that is theoretically enough peak power to supply more than a million homes simultaneously.

We pioneer at a scale where many solutions are still being developed. We take ownership, share knowledge and make decisions together. Rapid growth also calls for adaptability: priorities shift and not everything is defined in advance.

Your role

You develop and growth our Giga platform. You build software in Python, working with technologies including SQL, Terraform, Grafana and data processing. You do not need to know everything already: you enjoy learning beyond your own specialism.

What will you work on? When a new battery site goes live, data on capacity, performance and equipment status needs to flow reliably into our platform. You build the software and integrations that make this happen. At the same time, you strengthen the foundations: fewer manual steps, better-documented code and reusable solutions for future sites. We work by the principle ‘you build it, you run it’. You can propose tools and improvements; important technical decisions are made together with the team and our IT Lead.

What will you do?

  • Build software. Develop and maintain Python services and integrations for new battery sites.

  • Make data reliable. Build and improve data pipelines, quality checks and monitoring.

  • Work smarter. Automate repeatable tasks and improve documentation, standards and maintainability, using AI tools where useful.

  • Own what you build. Test, deploy and support your software, and discuss technical improvements with the team.

  • Add knowledge, creativity and fun to the IT team.

What do you bring?

  • Higher professional education (HBO) level of thinking and working, and at least four years of relevant software development experience.

  • Python experience; one year may be sufficient if you have also programmed in other languages.

  • Experience with at least one cloud platform: GCP, AWS or Azure.

  • Interest in data engineering and DevOps; Terraform, SQL and CI/CD knowledge is a plus.

  • A broad technical mindset, ownership and a willingness to automate, document and share knowledge.

  • Good English communication skills and availability to work from our Amsterdam office at least three days a week.

Energy-sector experience and Dutch language skills are not required.

Why join GIGA Storage?

  • Visible impact. Your software helps bring new battery sites into operation.

  • Technical variety. Combine software, data and cloud while broadening your skills.

  • Room to contribute. Help automate our platform and prepare it for the next stage of growth.

  • Build together. Join five international IT colleagues in our new Buitenveldert office, close to Amsterdam Zuid.

What do we offer?

  • A competitive salary plus holiday allowance (8%)

  • A fixed year-end bonus (7-9%) and performance-related bonus (max 10%).

  • 28 days of annual leave for full-time employment

  • A pension plan.

  • A €750 annual learning budget, laptop, phone allowance and e-bike scheme.

  • Hybrid working: at least three days a week in our Amsterdam office; choose home or office for the remaining days.

  • Healthy lunches and occasional fun activities
