# Staff Software Engineer – Data Substrate
## About the Role
Twilio is seeking an experienced Staff Software Engineer to join its **Data Substrate** team. This role will focus on architecting scalable, reliable data solutions and large-scale data infrastructure while driving technical innovation across the organization.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in distributed systems and data technologies, strong software engineering capabilities, and a proven track record of delivering complex data projects at scale. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, influence technical direction, mentor engineers, and help ensure data quality, integrity, security, and operational excellence throughout the data lifecycle.
## Key Responsibilities
* Serve as a subject matter expert in distributed systems, data technologies, and software engineering.
* Architect and implement scalable, efficient data systems, storage solutions, and data processing frameworks using modern technologies.
* Design, build, and operate large-scale data platforms on cloud computing infrastructure such as AWS.
* Drive technical innovation and research into emerging data technologies and engineering best practices.
* Architect and deliver complex, large-scale data infrastructure projects.
* Orchestrate, scale, and manage containerized applications in production environments.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and translate them into scalable technical solutions.
* Influence technical roadmaps and drive alignment across engineering and cross-functional teams.
* Mentor and coach engineers while fostering technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning.
* Ensure data quality, integrity, and security throughout the data lifecycle.
* Apply industry best practices and compliance standards to data infrastructure and platform development.
* Deliver high-impact results in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
## Required Qualifications
* Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
* 8+ years of software development experience, with a focus on data infrastructure.
* Proven experience architecting and delivering complex, large-scale data projects.
* Strong expertise with big data and distributed computing technologies, including:
* Kafka
* ClickHouse
* Spark
* Other distributed computing systems
* Strong experience orchestrating, scaling, and managing containerized applications in production using:
* Kubernetes (K8s)
* Terraform
* Helm
* Experience designing, building, and operating large-scale data platforms on cloud infrastructure such as AWS.
* Proficiency in **Python, Java, Bash, and Go**.
* Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
* Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence technical roadmaps and drive cross-functional alignment.
* Proven leadership experience mentoring and developing engineers.
* Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and deliver high-impact results.
## Preferred Qualifications
* Knowledge of integrating with various authorization and authentication systems.
* Knowledge of networking and network security.
* Deep expertise with **ClickHouse**, including demonstrated experience architecting, tuning, and operating ClickHouse at scale.

## Compensation & Benefits
The estimated pay range provided for candidates hired in Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Vermont, or Washington, D.C. is:
**$171,120–$213,900 USD**
This role may be eligible for Twilio's equity plan and corporate bonus plan.
