# Software Engineer (L2) – Voice Trust
## About the Role
Twilio is seeking a Software Engineer (L2) to join the Voice Connectivity Trust team in the United States. This role focuses on building and operating reliable voice communication services that help Twilio customers connect with their customers and improve the likelihood that calls are answered.
As a Software Engineer on the Voice Trust team, you will participate across the full software development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, technical design, estimation, sprint planning, development, testing, deployment, and on-call support. You will own and operate services in a distributed production environment while using Agile methodologies to continuously deliver reliable, scalable solutions.
## Key Responsibilities
* Design, implement, test, deploy, and operationalize real-time services with high-throughput and low-latency requirements.
* Own, operate, and maintain services in a distributed production environment.
* Work closely with Product Managers and other stakeholders to understand customer needs and develop simple, robust, and scalable solutions.
* Participate in requirements gathering, technical design, estimation, sprint planning, coding, testing, deployments, and production support.
* Collaborate with technical leads, architects, and cross-functional teams through clear and detailed technical documentation.
* Help scale a complex distributed platform with global points of presence focused on high availability, reliability, throughput, low latency, and media fidelity.
* Develop innovative solutions to customer challenges within the Voice channel.
* Participate in on-call rotations, incident response, monitoring, and operational support.
* Apply Agile development practices to continuously deliver value to customers.
* Review and evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, security, performance, and maintainability.
## Required Qualifications
* 2–3+ years of hands-on experience working with large-scale, distributed applications in JVM-based technologies.
* Strong Java fundamentals with the ability to architect, review, and debug code written by yourself, teammates, or AI coding agents.
* Experience building RESTful services, API design, and event-driven architectures using technologies such as Kafka and SQS.
* Understanding of CI/CD pipelines.
* Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS, GCP, OpenStack, or Azure.
* Experience with on-call rotations, incident response, and monitoring/alerting tools such as Prometheus, Datadog, or Grafana.
* Excellent written communication skills for effective AI prompting and clear technical documentation, with or without AI assistance.
* Proven ability to critically evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, security, performance, and maintainability.
* Demonstrated proficiency with AI coding assistants such as Claude, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar tools, including the ability to describe workflows and provide examples.
* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related engineering field.
* Strong Computer Science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and distributed systems.
* Ability to work effectively in a team environment while demonstrating strong motivation and the ability to motivate others.
## Preferred Qualifications
* Ability to demonstrate with metrics how AI has been used to increase productivity.
* Experience scaling data tiers using a variety of SQL/NoSQL databases and caching technologies.
* Hands-on experience scaling production backend systems and designing horizontally scalable, resilient systems that perform reliably under load.
* Knowledge and experience working with SIP protocol.
* Knowledge and experience working with Stir/Shaken protocol.
## Work Arrangement & Location
* Remote position within the USA.

* Occasional travel may be required for project or team in-person meetings, customer meetings, team gatherings, or functional off-sites.
## Compensation & Benefits
Salary ranges provided for candidates residing in specified locations:
* Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Vermont, or Washington, D.C.: **$138,700–$173,400**
* New York, New Jersey, Washington State, or California outside the San Francisco Bay Area: **$146,800–$183,600**
* San Francisco Bay Area, California: **$163,100–$203,900**
