Want to build strong engineering teams? Join Yahara as a Software Engineering Manager focused on career growth, hiring, and well-supported project delivery.

About Yahara:

We help scientific organizations solve hard problems and move their industries forward, from life sciences startups and CROs to the teams building lab software and scientific instruments. It's work we're proud of, and we're excited about the successes still ahead.

Join a team recognized as one of Madison Magazine's Best Places to Work, where innovation thrives and collaboration drives success. We don't just build software. We empower people and transform industries.

Important Notes about this Position:

  • This is a hybrid position based out of our office in Madison, WI.
  • We are unable to provide sponsorship.

The Opportunity:

Your focus will be facilitating the career growth, development, and wellbeing of our software, requirements, and QA engineers. You'll work with the hiring team to help recruit, interview, and refine our processes over time. You'll also make sure projects and people have the support they need, contributing hands-on work and project support as needed.

Our Approach:

We build on strong engineering fundamentals: solid methodology, rigorous testing, and sound architecture. We use AI tools like Claude and Codex where they speed up delivery, while keeping critical thinking and engineering discipline at the center. We own the quality, accuracy, and understanding of the code we ship.

What You'll Do:

  • Hold regular 1:1s with each direct report.
  • Conduct performance reviews that are honest, specific, and actionable.
  • Understand each engineer's goals and strengths, and use them to guide assignments.
  • Address performance concerns and conflicts early and directly.
  • Partner with Technical Leads and PMs to match engineers to the right projects.
  • Advocate for engineers in staffing and resource discussions.
  • Onboard new hires with the context and connections they need to ramp up.
  • Work with the hiring team to recruit, interview, and refine our hiring processes over time.
  • Monitor project health and provide hands-on work and project support as needed.
  • Use AI tools like Claude Code to improve management workflows.

What You'll Bring:

Experience:

  • A proven technical track record in software engineering.
  • Technical depth that earns credibility with engineers and supports hands-on project work.

Mindset:

  • Genuine care for people and comfort leading difficult conversations.
  • Commitment to people leadership as a primary focus.
  • Clear communication with both leadership and engineers.
  • Curiosity about how AI is changing engineering and management practice.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience managing or mentoring engineers, including giving direct performance feedback.
  • A consulting or client-services background.
  • Experience with life sciences organizations, lab systems, or regulated scientific software.
  • Technical Lead or architect experience on client projects.
  • Coaching or management training.
  • Experience recruiting, interviewing, or improving hiring processes.
