The Role and Team
At Medallia, our Nexus Collection & Data Platform team builds and operates the critical backend services that power how surveys are executed, distributed, processed, and collected across Nexus, Medallia’s next-generation experience management platform.
Our systems sit at the core of Nexus’s data platform and support large-scale, highly available workloads across many enterprise customers. The team owns services and capabilities related to survey execution, distribution, response processing, webhooks, messaging integrations, and the streaming pipelines that turn raw collection events into reliable, reportable data.
As Nexus continues to scale, we are evolving these systems to improve performance, reliability, scalability, and operational efficiency while building out key parts of the platform from the ground up on a modern, cloud-native stack.
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who enjoys solving challenging backend and distributed systems problems, working with high-throughput streaming services, and building reliable software that operates at enterprise scale.
You will work closely with experienced engineers, Product Management, QA, and other platform teams to design and deliver capabilities that directly impact how millions of surveys and responses are processed across Nexus.
This role is based remotely in Pune. Candidates for this position are required to reside within the Pune metropolitan area. Relocation support is not available at this time.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, test, and maintain backend services and features for Nexus’s Collection and Data Platform.
- Build scalable and reliable systems that support high-volume survey distribution, response processing, and data collection workflows.
- Work with distributed and event-driven architectures, including asynchronous processing, Kafka-based messaging (MSK), and stream processing with Apache Flink.
- Develop and maintain REST APIs, webhooks, and integrations with internal and external systems.
- Analyze performance and scalability challenges and contribute to improvements in throughput, latency, reliability, and resource utilization across the ingestion and streaming pipeline.
- Collaborate with senior engineers, Product Managers, QA, and other engineering teams to clarify requirements, evaluate technical solutions, and deliver features incrementally.
- Troubleshoot production issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement solutions that improve system reliability and prevent recurrence.
- Participate in the team’s on-call rotation and contribute to monitoring, observability, and operational improvements.
- Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code and actively participate in code reviews and technical design discussions.
- Contribute to the continuous evolution of Nexus’s collection and streaming architecture while maintaining compatibility with large-scale, multi-tenant production environments.
- Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly to improve engineering productivity while validating generated code for correctness, security, maintainability, and performance.
- Share technical knowledge within the team and contribute to engineering best practices.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- 4+ years of backend software development experience, preferably using Java.
- Strong understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, and software engineering fundamentals.
- Experience designing, implementing, or maintaining backend services or APIs.
- Experience working with relational databases and writing efficient database queries.
- Understanding of distributed systems concepts, asynchronous processing, concurrency, and service-oriented architectures.
- Experience writing automated tests and debugging production software.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude, or similar tools, combined with the ability to critically review and validate generated code.
- Demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken English.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Apache Kafka or other event-driven/message-based architectures.
- Experience with Apache Flink or other stream-processing frameworks (Spark Streaming, Kafka Streams, or similar).
- Experience with PostgreSQL or similar relational databases.
- Experience with wide-column/KV stores such as Cassandra, AWS Keyspaces, or DynamoDB.
- Experience building or integrating REST APIs and webhooks.
- Experience designing or operating high-throughput, highly available distributed systems.
- Familiarity with scalability, performance tuning, caching, retries, idempotency, and fault-tolerant system design.
- Experience with OLAP/analytical engines (StarRocks, ClickHouse, Druid, or similar).
- Experience with monitoring, observability, production troubleshooting, and incident management.
- Familiarity with CI/CD practices and modern software development workflows.
- Experience working with large-scale SaaS platforms or multi-tenant enterprise systems.
