York Space Systems was founded to radically improve spacecraft affordability and reliability, transforming, and enabling next- generation space mission operations worldwide. Today, York is one of the most innovative aerospace companies, specializing in end-to-end customer solutions and the rapid production of spacecraft platforms. York’s complete Space Segment Solution includes spacecraft production, payload integration, system integration & test, launch services, ground segment services, and mission operations, enabling customers to leverage York’s existing technology solutions to get to orbit rapidly and responsively. We’re looking to expand our team across the board.
York is seeking multiple Software Systems Engineers across various experience levels who will be responsible for program-focused requirements management, technical design, planning, and coordination to deliver software solutions on York programs. The ideal candidate for this role is detail oriented, adept at software component and interface design, can articulate technical designs to both technical and non-technical audiences, and has experience managing software projects.
The Software Systems Engineer represents Software-focused systems engineering and will support the Program Manager and Mission Lead System Engineer to determine the tasks and activities needed to deliver simulations, ground software, flight software, and site reliability and engineering services for customer programs. This role will be a critical member of our team, ensuring the quality and completeness of delivered software solutions for our programs by driving the organization and collaboration of space systems engineering teams.
Responsibilities
- Build a deep understanding of each mission’s objectives, scope, milestones, risks, schedules, and system needs so you can guide the delivery of mission‑critical software products and services.
- Partner closely with program managers and lead systems engineers to keep software efforts aligned with flight software, payloads, GEPs, and external mission partners.
- Identify, track, and manage software‑related risks across the program.
- Represent software in customer meetings, serving as the technical voice for software products and mission needs.
- Lead the full lifecycle of mission software — from architecture and design through integration, testing, deployment, and on‑orbit operations support.
- Perform requirements gap analyses, define derived requirements, and own verification and validation efforts.
- Create clear UML artifacts including use cases, component diagrams, sequence diagrams, interfaces, and architecture views that drive technical design.
- Collaborate with product development teams by shaping epic designs, advising as a technical SME, and overseeing all mission‑related feature development and testing.
- Present software design decisions, development approaches, test plans, and progress updates to internal and external stakeholders.
- Drive execution on key mission milestones, software tests, demos, and mission readiness events.
- Support mission operations by ensuring ground software, tools, and simulations perform reliably during rehearsals, training, and throughout the mission lifecycle.
Required Qualification
- BS in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering or related technical field.
- 2+ years as a software engineer or systems engineer, contributing to design and development, ideally across multiple parts of a system or mission stack.
- Self-starter, autonomous executor, and willing to stretch beyond current knowledge areas.
- An understanding of core software‑architecture principles like separation of concerns, loose coupling, high cohesion, scalability, security by design, and interoperability.
- Ability to clearly explain complex software and system designs to both technical and non‑technical audiences, and you’re comfortable presenting to senior leadership and customers.
- Experience with UML to build use cases, component diagrams, interface diagrams, and sequence diagrams — and you use those artifacts to drive clarity in system architecture and software design.
- Proven ability to engage and motivate multidisciplinary teams, while working at least 4 days in office.
- Skilled in schedule definition, cost estimation, and personnel forecasting.
- Active Secret (or higher) clearance required
- Willingness to work full-time in our Greenwood Village, CO office
Preferred Qualifications
- Active TS/SCI clearance
- Experience delivering software for space systems, satellites, and/or ground systems to Government and/or Commercial customers
- System Experience:
- Jira RTM
- Draw.io
- GitLab
- Atlassian tools (Confluence, Jira)
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
