How do you help make a difference?

As a Solution Designer, you join the AnalySD team of analysts and solution designers within YPTO’s Business Area "Commercial Channels & Products" and contribute to shaping SNCB-NMBS’s commercial channels and product offerings, driving innovation and enhancing the overall customer experience.

The Business Area "Commercial Channels & Products" is the IT partner of SNCB-NMBS’s Directorate for Marketing & Sales. This directorate manages all sales channels, both front-end and back-end, as well as SNCB-NMBS aftersales solutions, including the website, mobile app, cash desks, ticket vending machines, sales on board and B2B sales channels.

You are involved throughout the entire project lifecycle, from gathering requirements and conducting feasibility studies to defining technical specifications, designing and documenting APIs, supporting development teams and participating in user acceptance testing. You evaluate customer needs and objectives, provide appropriate guidance and challenge the customer where needed to identify the best solution to achieve the intended goals. Working closely with Solution Architects, you translate high-level solution designs into detailed technical specifications and designs that can be implemented by development teams.

What is your role at SNCB?

As a Solution Designer, you will take on the following responsibilities:

  • You gather requirements, conduct feasibility studies, understand business needs and translate them into clear technical specifications, while evaluating customer needs and objectives, providing guidance and challenging the customer where needed to identify the best solution.

  • You collaborate with Solution Architects and developers to design, implement and maintain APIs that meet business requirements and adhere to best practices and industry standards, translating high-level solution designs into detailed technical specifications and designs with a focus on modularity, reusability, flexibility and maintainability.

  • You identify and document interfaces, integration points and connection types between systems and components, ensuring alignment with the overall solution architecture, architectural guidelines and applicable technology, integration and security standards.

  • You create comprehensive API and technical documentation, including API specifications, usage guides, process analyses, functional test scenarios and technical specifications, and present the designed end products to internal and external stakeholders.

  • You work closely with development, project and support teams to ensure technical feasibility and alignment with business needs and the agreed solution design; you provide technical guidance, participate in technical reviews, troubleshoot functional and technical issues or defects, proactively identify bottlenecks and propose solutions or alternatives.

  • You assist in test plans, test cases and user acceptance testing, taking non-functional requirements such as performance, security, availability and maintainability into account, while safeguarding the existing business and solution architecture and aligning with Enterprise, System and/or Solution Architects when needed.

Why is this job a good fit for you?

  • You have a minimum of 5 years of working experience in technical analysis/solution design.

  • You have 5+ years of experience creating and documenting APIs.

  • You reside in Belgium and are able to work on-site up to two days per week, with one fixed and one flexible day. In case of urgent needs, mandatory office meetings or events, additional on-site presence may be required.

You also possess these technical skills:

  • You have profound knowledge of technologies commonly used for API development and integration, such as REST, JSON, XML, GraphQL and Swagger/OpenAPI specifications.

  • You are proficient in analysis techniques such as requirements gathering, process modelling and use case development.

  • You know software development lifecycle (SDLC) methodologies, such as Agile or Waterfall.

  • You understand system and solution design principles and can translate business requirements and high-level designs into detailed technical specifications.

  • You have good knowledge of MS Office, Teams and Sparx EA.

  • You have good and demonstrable knowledge of business process modelling techniques and standards, including BPMN and UML.

  • You have good knowledge of API design and documentation and 5+ years of experience creating and documenting APIs.

  • You have experience writing User Stories.

  • You have experience with SAFe, Agile and Scrum.

  • You have extensive experience with Jira and Confluence.

  • You understand interfaces, integration points and connection types between systems and components.

  • You understand relevant architecture, technology, integration and security standards and ensure technical designs and API specifications comply with applicable standards.

  • You take relevant non-functional requirements, such as performance, security, availability and maintainability, into account when defining technical solutions and APIs.

  • You can create comprehensive API and technical documentation, including API specifications, usage guides and other documentation that facilitates implementation and integration by internal and external development teams.

  • You can assist in creating test plans, test cases and user acceptance testing.

  • You can troubleshoot functional and technical issues or defects in collaboration with developers and support teams and proactively identify bottlenecks and propose potential solutions or alternatives.

  • You can participate in technical reviews and provide guidance during implementation so the delivered solution remains aligned with the agreed design.

  • You can safeguard the existing business and solution architecture and align with Enterprise, System and/or Solution Architects when needed.

  • You can present designed end products such as process analyses, functional test scenarios, API documentation and technical specifications to internal and external stakeholders.

And these soft skills:

  • You have strong critical-thinking and decision-making skills, demonstrate resilience under pressure and ambiguity, and are adaptable in learning new technologies and responding to changing business needs.
