Solutions Engineer, Critical Monitoring
Location: Columbus, OH/Hybrid, with travel to client sites up to 50%
Reports to: CEO
Department: Sales
The Solutions Engineer, Critical Monitoring, is the technical lead on Motion opportunities
from first conversation through sale. Motion delivers critical monitoring as a service for
hyperscale data centers, from active construction through turnover and into live operating
spaces. In this role, you learn what a client needs to protect and why, map Motion's portfolio
of offerings to the outcomes they are accountable for, and turn that into a scope delivery can
deliver against. This is a dynamic role for a problem solver with hyperscale construction
experience who is as comfortable on an active job site or in a live data hall as in front of an
executive.
Key Responsibilities:
Discovery & Problem Definition
Client Discovery: Lead technical discovery with owners, general contractors and trade
partners to understand the risks they manage and the outcomes they are measured
on.
Understanding the Why: Determine what needs to be monitored, where and why, from
equipment protection and contamination control during construction to air quality and
uptime in active spaces.
Site Assessment: Walk active construction sites and operating facilities, and review
drawings, equipment schedules and submials so every recommendation reflects
what is actually there.
Solution Design & Scoping
Outcome Mapping: Map Motion’s portfolio, including critical monitoring, indoor air
quality, active space monitoring and managed services, to each client’s outcomes and
recommend the right combination.
Solution Design: Define sensing, placement, connectivity and reporting for each
environment, and adapt the design as a site moves through construction phases and
into operation.
Proper Scoping: Write clear scopes of work with inclusions, exclusions, assumptions
and acceptance criteria, so every project starts from an agreed baseline.
Cost Basis: Provide Finance with bills of materials and cost inputs so pricing reflects
the full solution.
Technical Sales Leadership
Client Presentations: Present Motion’s platform and approach to technical and
executive audiences, and run demos, pilots and proofs of concept.
Proposals & RFPs: Own the technical content of proposals, RFIs, RFPs, and security and
network reviews.
Deal Readiness: Confirm technical and commercial alignment internally before any
quote is released.
Handoff & Continuity
Delivery Handooff: Transition each sold project to delivery with a complete scope and
design, and stay engaged through kicko.
Scope Changes: Manage changes after NTP through a formal change process.
Offering Development
Reference Designs: Build reusable scoping templates and reference designs that scale
across clients and facility types.
Voice of the Field: Bring client needs and field lessons back to Product and Engineering
to shape new offerings.
Qualifications & Experience
Experience: 5+ years in solutions engineering, sales engineering or applications
engineering, with meaningful time on active hyperscale or mission critical construction
sites.
Environment Fluency: Understands how data centers are built and operated, how
owners, general contractors and trade partners work together, and how construction
documents and submittals drive decisions.
Problem Solving: Able to diagnose a client’s underlying risk and design a practical
solution, rather than filling the client to a fixed product.
Technical Breadth: Working knowledge of environmental sensing, wireless and site
networking (e.g., LoRaWAN, Wi-Fi, cellular), and mechanical and electrical systems in
critical facilities.
Scoping Discipline: Proven ability to write scopes and estimates that hold up in
execution.
Communication: Explains technical tradeos plainly to superintendents, facilities
teams, engineers and executives.
Field Readiness: Able to travel to active sites and meet site safety requirements; OSHA
10 required or obtained within 30 days.
Preferred:
Experience with air quality or contamination control standards (ISO 14644,
ASHRAE), BMS or EPMS platforms, and a CRM such as HubSpot.
