About Alcoholics Anonymous
Founded in 1935, Alcoholics Anonymous World Services (AAWS) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and an international Fellowship of people who have had a drinking problem. The Alcoholics Anonymous Fellowship is nonprofessional, self-supporting, multiracial, apolitical, and available almost everywhere. The General Service Office (GSO) in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of New York City employs approximately 97 people (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and serves over 1.3 million members in the U.S. and Canada.
Our mission at the GSO is to support carrying the message of Alcoholics Anonymous to the still-suffering alcoholic by providing services to A.A. members, groups, and others; publishing and distributing A.A. literature, preserving A.A. history, and sharing A.A.’s collective experience. Job Summary
The Spanish Managing Editor is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing Spanish-language translation and editorial projects from initial assignment through final publication or delivery, as well as scheduling and managing all day-to-day editorial activities related to the Spanish translation of A.A. Conference-approved literature, outward-facing communications, newsletters, member correspondence, service documents, reports, and other materials including Conference background, audiobooks, and videos. The goal is to ensure clear communication and high-quality resources for Spanish-speaking members of the Fellowship.
The Managing Editor also collaborates with the Spanish Translator & Editor and external contractors to maintain accuracy, consistency of style and format, and overall quality across all Spanish language materials. The Managing Editor is dedicated to providing exceptional services to Spanish-speaking members of A.A., supporting their full participation in the general service structure.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Spanish Translator & Editor to set project timelines, ensuring timely delivery of key deliverables.
- Edit and prepare for press all new and revised Alcoholics Anonymous Conference-approved literature in Spanish, as well as the GSO bulletins Box 4-5-9, Sharing from Behind the Walls, About A.A., the General Service Board Quarterly Report, AAWS Highlights, and service materials including handbooks and workbooks.
- Coordinate recording sessions with relevant stakeholders and approve the final versions of Spanish audiobooks and videos.
- Edit materials for Regional and Special Forums, the General Service Conference, and A.A. International Conventions, World Service Material; also translate staff correspondence to facilitate communication with Spanish-speaking services in the U.S., Canada, and abroad.
- Collaborate with the Director of Language Services and the Spanish Translator & Editor to review, revise, and update all Spanish-language publications.
- Participate in the hiring process and oversee Spanish-language projects with contractors and related tasks.
- Collaborate with the Language Services Director, French Managing Editor, and team to develop and refine departmental procedures that increase productivity.
- Monitor project status, timelines, priorities, and deliverables; identify potential issues or delays and coordinate appropriate adjustments to ensure successful completion of projects.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
Required Skills
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, in English and Spanish, with deep knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, usage, and cultural nuance.
- Native Spanish speaker with comprehensive knowledge of Spanish-language variants and regional usage.
- Strong copyediting and proofreading skills, with attention to detail and consistency in style and format.
- Detailed knowledge of editing procedures and terminology; working knowledge of current typesetting and publishing practices.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
- Experience working with CAT tools.
- Strong knowledge of project management principles and practices, with demonstrated experience managing multiple projects, establishing priorities, coordinating timelines and deliverables, and working effectively with internal stakeholders and external contractors.
- Proficiency with project management software and digital tools used to manage workflows, timelines, assignments, and deliverables.
- Experience developing, maintaining, or applying style guides, glossaries, and terminology resources to ensure consistency across Spanish-language materials.
- Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse internal teams and external contractors.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in translation and/or language-related fields, or relevant work experience.
- A minimum of seven years of experience in text translating and editing from English into Spanish.
- Strong knowledge of translation theory, editorial practices, project management, and translation memory tools and technologies.
- Familiarity with A.A. literature, history, principles, and service structure preferred
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis; AAWS is unable to provide or assume employment-based visa sponsorship for this position now or in the future.
Physical Requirements
- Availability to work in person a minimum of three days per week, including Friday.
- Some weekend or evening work may be required during busy times, General Service Board weekends, or Conference.
- Ability to sit at a desk for a 7-hour workday with breaks.
- Ability to use a computer, including tasks such as typing and using software, and the ability to read and interpret data on a computer screen for extended periods.
- Ability to work in an indoor office setting with controlled climate conditions.
- Tolerance to moderate noise levels typical of an office setting.
Location
This position is in New York City; we work a hybrid schedule of 3 days in the office (including Friday) and 2 days remote, with occasional additional in-office days.
Pay & Benefits
This is an exempt position with an annual pay range of $95,000 - $110,000.
