We are seeking a Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer with deep technical expertise in Oracle Database and Microsoft SQL Server platforms. This role is a hands-on Subject Matter Expert (SME) responsible for designing, optimising, securing, and supporting business-critical database services across on-premises and hybrid cloud environments.

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring resilient, secure, compliant, and cost-efficient database solutions are designed and delivered. They will contribute to technology roadmaps, driving automation, and supporting strategic initiatives such as upgrades, migrations, consolidation, high availability, disaster recovery, and cloud modernisation.

What you will do

  • Act as a technical SME for Oracle Database and Microsoft SQL Server platforms.
  • Design, implement, and support database solutions for business-critical workloads across Production, Development, Test, and Disaster Recovery environments.
  • Own and provide technical direction for Oracle RAC, ASM, Data Guard, GoldenGate, RMAN, and Enterprise Manager solutions.
  • Own and provide technical direction for SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, Failover Cluster Instances, replication, log shipping, backup, recovery, and monitoring solutions.
  • Deliver against database platform strategy and roadmap, including upgrades, migrations, consolidation, modernisation, and remediation of end-of-life or end-of-support platforms.
  • Drive platform stability, performance, capacity, availability, and resilience, ensuring database services meet operational and business requirements.
  • Lead complex performance tuning, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and resolution of major incidents and recurring problems.
  • Develop and maintain robust backup, recovery, disaster recovery, and business continuity capabilities, including regular validation and failover testing.
  • Identify and deliver cost optimisation opportunities across database licensing, infrastructure utilisation, consolidation, storage, and support models.
  • Develop automation and standardisation using Ansible, PowerShell, Shell scripting, Python, and Infrastructure-as-Code practices.
  • Ensure database security through patching, vulnerability remediation, privileged access controls, hardening, encryption, auditing, and compliance evidence.
  • Collaborate closely with application owners, operating system teams, cloud engineering teams, architecture, security, network, storage, vendors, and wider Infrastructure & Operations teams.
  • Maintain high-quality technical documentation, including platform designs, standards, build guides, runbooks, operational procedures, capacity reports, and audit artefacts.
  • Provide technical leadership for major changes and projects, including planning, risk assessment, implementation, validation, and rollback.
  • Participate in the on-call rota to support critical incidents.

What we're looking for

  • Strong hands-on experience administering enterprise-scale Oracle Database and Microsoft SQL Server environments.
  • Deep Oracle expertise covering RAC, ASM, Data Guard, GoldenGate, RMAN, performance tuning, patching, upgrades, and migrations.
  • Deep SQL Server expertise covering Always On Availability Groups, clustering, replication, log shipping, backup and recovery, performance tuning, patching, upgrades, and migrations.
  • Proven experience supporting highly available, business-critical production database services.
  • Experience leading database upgrades, migrations, consolidations, platform refreshes, and disaster recovery implementations.
  • Strong knowledge of database monitoring, capacity management, alerting, incident management, and proactive problem prevention.
  • Experience working in hybrid environments, integrating on-premises database platforms with Azure, OCI, AWS, or GCP services.
  • Solid knowledge of Linux and Windows operating systems, compute, storage, networking, clustering, and virtualisation fundamentals.
  • Strong troubleshooting capability across complex, multi-layered database and infrastructure environments.
  • Experience with automation tools such as Ansible and scripting technologies such as PowerShell, Shell, or Python.
  • Working knowledge of ITIL processes, change governance, audit controls, security compliance, and vulnerability remediation.

Technical Competencies

  • Deep technical expertise and recognition as a go-to SME for Oracle and SQL Server platforms.
  • Ability to independently lead technical delivery of complex database changes, migrations, upgrades, and recovery activities.
  • Strong understanding of high availability, resiliency, backup, recovery, replication, and disaster recovery design.
  • Advanced database performance analysis, optimisation, capacity planning, and root cause analysis skills.
  • Experience with automation, standardisation, optimisation, and platform engineering practices.
  • Ability to define database standards, reference architectures, operational controls, and lifecycle roadmaps.
  • Ability to contribute to design and technology decisions in partnership with architecture, security, cloud, and application teams.

Behavioural & Professional Skills

  • Ownership & Accountability: Takes full responsibility for database platform stability, security, and technical outcomes.
  • Technical Leadership: Influences engineering direction and mentors colleagues without requiring direct line management responsibility.
  • Outcome-Driven: Focuses on measurable improvements in availability, performance, cost, security, and resilience.
  • Collaboration: Works effectively across infrastructure, cloud, security, architecture, application, and supplier teams.
