About the Role

We're looking for a Senior AI Engineer to help build and advance the AI capabilities behind IXOPAY's AI Payments Intelligence platform.

In this hands-on engineering role, you'll design and develop intelligent agents, LLM-powered applications, and scalable AI infrastructure that transform complex payment data into actionable insights and automated workflows. You'll build systems that enable merchants to interact with payment intelligence through natural language, explore transaction data, and make smarter decisions to improve payment performance, reduce costs, and manage risk.

Working closely with Engineering, Product, and customer-facing teams, you'll own technical initiatives from architecture and development through deployment, evaluation, and ongoing optimization. You'll help shape how AI agents securely interact with IXOPAY's platform, data, and APIs while ensuring solutions are reliable, auditable, and built for enterprise-scale use.

What You'll Do

Build Intelligent Agents & AI-Powered Solutions

• Design, develop, and deploy production-ready AI agents and LLM-powered applications that support IXOPAY's AI Payments Intelligence platform.

• Build agent orchestration frameworks, including tool calling, multi-agent workflows, and coordinated agent execution.

• Develop capabilities that translate natural-language requests into secure, auditable actions across IXOPAY's applications, APIs, and data environments.

• Enable merchants to explore transaction data, generate insights, and perform complex analyses through intuitive AI-powered experiences.

• Evaluate emerging AI technologies and identify opportunities to improve agent capabilities, reliability, and business value.

Develop Scalable AI Infrastructure & Integrations

• Build and maintain Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, connectors, and APIs that securely expose IXOPAY's transaction data, analytics, and platform capabilities to AI applications.

• Design and develop scalable backend services and data pipelines using Python and cloud-native technologies.

• Integrate LLMs with internal systems, external services, and third-party AI clients while maintaining appropriate authentication, permissions, and data access controls.

• Build cloud-based AI solutions using AWS technologies such as Bedrock, S3, DynamoDB, Cognito, and SQS.

• Partner with Backend, Data, and Platform Engineering teams to ensure AI capabilities integrate reliably with existing infrastructure.

Build Reliable RAG & LLM Systems

• Design, implement, and optimize Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines and knowledge bases across payment data, product documentation, and integration materials.

• Develop and improve document processing, chunking, embeddings, indexing, retrieval, and reranking strategies.

• Establish evaluation frameworks to measure retrieval accuracy, response quality, latency, reliability, and operational cost.

• Implement automated testing, regression evaluations, tracing, monitoring, and observability for LLM and agent-based systems.

• Continuously improve model and agent performance while ensuring sensitive financial and customer data is handled securely.

Drive Technical Ownership & Innovation

• Take hands-on ownership of complex AI engineering initiatives from initial concept through production deployment and continuous improvement.

• Partner with Product and Engineering teams to define requirements, evaluate new capabilities, and contribute to architectural decisions.

• Collaborate with customer-facing teams to understand merchant challenges and translate business needs into practical AI-driven solutions.

• Contribute to analytical, visualization, and user-facing integrations that make complex payment intelligence accessible and actionable.

• Champion modern AI development practices, including responsible use of AI-assisted engineering tools, automation, and continuous experimentation.

• Share technical knowledge and help strengthen AI engineering practices across the organization.

What You'll Bring

Required

• Advanced professional experience in Software Engineering, Backend Engineering, AI Engineering, or a related technical discipline, including hands-on experience building AI-powered applications.

• Python skills, with experience designing and developing scalable backend services, APIs, and data pipelines.

• Proven experience building and deploying LLM-powered applications, including RAG systems, tool/function calling, and agent-based workflows.

• Hands-on experience with agent orchestration, multi-agent systems, or similar AI workflow architectures.

• Experience integrating LLMs with external systems, APIs, and enterprise data sources, including MCP or comparable integration approaches.

• Strong understanding of prompt engineering, context management, retrieval optimization, and LLM application architecture.

• Experience evaluating and improving AI application quality through testing, tracing, monitoring, regression evaluations, and performance metrics.

• Strong understanding of secure application development, authentication, authorization, and responsible handling of sensitive data.

• Experience building and operating production software in cloud environments.

• Ability to independently design and deliver complex technical solutions while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.

• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and an ownership-oriented approach to engineering.

• Experience using modern AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity and software quality.

• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear business and product outcomes.

• A curious, entrepreneurial mindset and enthusiasm for building innovative, customer-focused technology.

Preferred

• Hands-on experience with AWS services such as Bedrock, S3, DynamoDB, Cognito, SQS, and related cloud-native technologies.

• Experience building and operating MCP servers, AI connectors, or enterprise agent integration frameworks.

• Experience with advanced RAG architectures, vector databases, embedding models, and retrieval evaluation techniques.

• Experience building autonomous or semi-autonomous agents with appropriate safeguards, permissions, and human oversight.

• Familiarity with LLMOps practices, including model evaluation, observability, cost optimization, and production monitoring.

• Experience with payment processing, payment data analytics, FinTech, fraud detection, or financial services.

• Experience working with high-volume transactional datasets and analytical systems.

• Experience developing analytical interfaces, data visualization components, or AI-powered user experiences.

• Experience working in a startup, scale-up, or other fast-moving technology environment.

This is a remote-friendly position, with a preference for candidates located in or near Munich, Germany.

We also welcome applications from candidates based elsewhere in Germany or other European countries. You'll have the flexibility to work remotely or from our Munich office, subject to applicable employment arrangements.
