Sr. Backend AI Developer

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Backend AI Developer within the Transformation Office is responsible for building, operating, and scaling the backend systems that power enterprise AI capabilities. This role focuses on implementing reliable, secure, and performant AI services that enable Generative AI, Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG), and agent‑based solutions to integrate with business applications and data platforms.

Operating at the intersection of backend engineering and applied AI, the Backend AI Developer translates approved AI architectures into robust APIs, pipelines, and services, ensuring that AI solutions are production ready, observable, and aligned with enterprise infrastructure standards across AWS and Azure environments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designs and implements backend services and APIs that support Generative AI and LLM‑powered applications, including request orchestration, prompt execution, and inference management.
  • Builds and maintains backend components for Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions, including document ingestion pipelines, embedding services, vector index management, retrieval logic, and response assembly.
  • Implements backend support for agent‑based AI systems, enabling task orchestration, state management, tool execution, and interaction with enterprise systems using platforms such as AWS AgentCore and Azure AI Agent Service.
  • Develops scalable, maintainable backend code primarily in Python, with supporting use of SQL and PySpark, following secure coding and performance best practices.
  • Integrates AI services with enterprise and legacy systems—including SQL Server, on‑prem databases, and mainframe‑adjacent platforms—using approved, non‑invasive integration patterns.
  • Implements authentication, authorization, logging, monitoring, and error‑handling mechanisms to ensure AI services meet enterprise security, auditability, and reliability requirements.
  • Supports deployment, configuration, and operation of AI backend workloads in AWS and Azure, including containerized and managed service‑based deployments.
  • Collaborates closely with Gen AI Architects, Applied AI Developers, data engineers, and infrastructure teams to ensure backend implementations align with architectural standards and business needs.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves backend performance issues related to latency, throughput, cost, and reliability of AI services.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Licensing

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative discipline from an accredited college or university required.

Master’s degree preferred

Experience

Four (4) to six (6) years of experience in backend or platform engineering, with at least two (2) years supporting AI‑driven or data‑intensive services in a production or enterprise environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Hands‑on experience developing backend services on AWS and/or Azure, including deployment and operations of cloud‑based applications.

Practical experience supporting LLM‑based systems, vector search services (e.g., OpenSearch, Pinecone, Azure AI Search), or event‑driven architectures.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong backend development skills in Python, with solid working knowledge of SQL, APIs (REST/gRPC), and backend service design
  • Working understanding of LLMs, embeddings, RAG architectures, and agent‑based systems sufficient to build and operate backend support services
  • Experience with data pipelines, asynchronous processing, and integration with enterprise data platforms
  • Knowledge of cloud infrastructure concepts, security patterns, and operational best practices
  • Ability to implement backend services in alignment with enterprise architecture, governance, and compliance requirements
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced Transformation Office or innovation‑driven environment
  • Ability to meet or exceed Performance Competencies
