About IXOPAY

IXOPAY is the enterprise-grade global payment infrastructure platform built for the era of agentic commerce. We equip merchants and enterprises with AI-driven intelligence, payment orchestration, advanced tokenization, and the tools to optimize every stage of the payments journey.

From intelligent routing and compliance to customizable modules and enterprise-scale orchestration, IXOPAY helps businesses integrate faster, improve payment performance, and expand globally with confidence.

At IXOPAY, our people are our greatest strength. Our collaborative culture is built on shared values that guide how we work, innovate, and support our customers.

About the Role

We're looking for a Senior Database Engineer to help build, operate, and evolve the database infrastructure that powers IXOPAY's global payment platform.

In this hands-on engineering role, you'll take ownership of the reliability, performance, security, and scalability of our business-critical MySQL database environments. Working with multi-terabyte databases supporting high transaction volumes, you'll optimize complex workloads, strengthen high availability, and ensure our database systems remain resilient as the platform grows.

As a key member of our Systems Engineering team, you'll work closely with other experienced engineers to troubleshoot complex challenges, improve database operations, and drive architectural improvements. You'll also have the opportunity to explore emerging database technologies and help shape the future of our platform, including distributed SQL, database sharding, and potential adoption of TiDB.

This is an opportunity to combine deep database expertise with meaningful technical ownership, working on large-scale production systems where performance, reliability, and security are essential to supporting global commerce.

What You'll Do

Build & Operate Reliable Database Infrastructure

  • Design, operate, maintain, and scale highly available MySQL and Percona Galera clusters supporting IXOPAY's global payment infrastructure.

  • Ensure the stability, availability, security, and performance of multi-terabyte databases operating in business-critical production environments.

  • Manage database replication, clustering, failover, and high-availability configurations to support resilient operations.

  • Support database infrastructure across enterprise data centers and cloud environments.

  • Continuously evaluate database health, capacity, and scalability to proactively address evolving platform requirements.

Optimize Database Performance

  • Analyze complex database workloads to identify performance bottlenecks and opportunities for optimization.

  • Perform advanced SQL query analysis, index optimization, execution plan analysis, and database performance tuning.

  • Monitor and analyze database performance using technologies such as Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM), Query Analytics (QAN), Grafana, and slow query logs.

  • Collaborate with Software Engineering teams to improve database interactions, optimize application queries, and resolve performance challenges.

  • Establish and improve monitoring, alerting, and performance management practices to maintain reliable production operations.

Drive Automation, Reliability & Continuous Improvement

  • Plan and execute database upgrades, migrations, and schema changes while minimizing disruption to production services.

  • Implement zero-downtime or near-zero-downtime database changes using replication, online schema change tools, Atlas, and related technologies.

  • Automate database operations, configuration management, and recurring maintenance tasks using tools such as Puppet, Bash, Python, or Go.

  • Troubleshoot complex production incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement long-term improvements to prevent recurring issues.

  • Contribute to database security, operational traceability, and engineering practices that support IXOPAY's PCI DSS compliance requirements.

Shape Database Architecture & Technical Direction

  • Contribute to the long-term architecture and scalability of IXOPAY's database platform.

  • Evaluate new database technologies and architectural approaches, including sharding, distributed SQL, and NewSQL solutions such as TiDB.

  • Identify opportunities to modernize database infrastructure, improve performance, and reduce operational complexity.

  • Partner with Systems Engineering and Software Engineering teams on technical decisions involving database design, reliability, and scalability.

  • Share knowledge, contribute to engineering best practices, and help strengthen database expertise across the organization.

What You'll Bring

Required

  • Several years of professional experience as a Database Engineer, MySQL Database Administrator, Database Reliability Engineer, or in a similar database-focused engineering role.

  • Deep hands-on expertise with MySQL in large-scale, production environments.

  • Strong experience with database performance tuning, SQL query optimization, indexing strategies, and execution plan analysis.

  • Experience designing, operating, and troubleshooting highly available database architectures, including replication and clustering.

  • Experience with MySQL high-availability technologies such as Percona Galera Cluster, ProxySQL, or comparable solutions.

  • Strong knowledge of Linux-based database environments and underlying infrastructure.

  • Experience with scripting, automation, or configuration management using technologies such as Puppet, Bash, Python, or Go.

  • Experience managing database upgrades, schema changes, migrations, and production maintenance with minimal downtime.

  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to investigate complex database performance and reliability issues.

  • Ability to independently own technical initiatives and take responsibility for business-critical production systems.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.

  • Very good written and spoken German language skills.

Preferred

  • Experience operating multi-terabyte databases or high-volume transactional systems.

  • Hands-on experience with Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM), Query Analytics (QAN), Grafana, or similar database monitoring and observability tools.

  • Experience with online schema change tools, Atlas, or other database migration and schema management technologies.

  • Familiarity with distributed SQL, NewSQL technologies such as TiDB, or database sharding strategies.

  • Experience supporting databases in hybrid infrastructure environments, including enterprise data centers and cloud platforms.

  • Experience working in security-sensitive or regulated environments, including PCI DSS.

  • Experience with database automation, Infrastructure as Code, and modern engineering practices.

  • Technical education or training in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Why Join IXOPAY?
