TITLE: Senior Director, Education Technology Innovation
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Chief Education and Global Health Officer
BASIC FUNCTION:
Provide strategic leadership for the American Academy of Pediatrics’ education technology innovation, digital learning platforms, AI-enabled education strategy, learning product development, and course production operations. Lead the development of a modern, learner-centered digital education ecosystem that supports AAP’s mission, strengthens member and customer value, improves revenue performance, and positions AAP as a leader in pediatric education.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead AAP’s education technology innovation strategy, including the identification, evaluation, testing, and implementation planning of emerging tools and approaches that can strengthen pediatric education, learner experience, operational efficiency, and business performance.
- Develop and guide AAP’s AI strategy for education for both internal efficiency and learning innovation. Identify practical AI use cases, support safe and responsible adoption, develop repeatable workflows and guidance, and evaluate AI-enabled learning models such as conversational simulations, adaptive feedback, learner coaching, scenario-based practice, personalized remediation, multilingual learning, and AI-supported assessment.
- Cultivate awareness of trends in medical education, pediatrics, CME, healthcare technology, AI, simulation, digital learning, learner behavior, and education product innovation. Use this knowledge to inform AAP’s long-term education technology roadmap, identify emerging opportunities, and ensure AAP remains competitive and relevant to current and future pediatric learners.
- Identify grant-funded and externally supported innovation opportunities that align with AAP’s education technology strategy. Partner with internal stakeholders to shape fundable project concepts, connect innovation ideas to potential funding sources, and ensure grant-funded initiatives support scalable long-term strategy.
- Provide strategic leadership for AAP’s learning platform ecosystem, including the future learning management system, education platforms, publishing-related workflows, search/discoverability, identity and access, commerce, membership integration, learner data, reporting, and cross-platform user experience.
- Lead the education platform identification and management process, ensuring that requirements are grounded in learner needs, future education strategy, instructional models, AI readiness, mobile access, accessibility, CME/MOC requirements, global delivery, analytics, integrations, operational workflows, and long-term scalability.
- Contribute to publishing and digital content ecosystem strategy, especially where education, publishing, authoring, review workflows, content reuse, metadata, search, licensing, and AI readiness intersect. Help distinguish platform limitations from workflow, governance, metadata, authoring, and user-experience challenges.
- Establish governance, requirements, evaluation criteria, decision gates, and pilot strategies for major education technology and platform initiatives. Translate business, learner, staff, and technical needs into actionable roadmaps, vendor requirements, implementation priorities, and success measures.
- Lead digital product delivery and production operations for AAP education products. Oversee the processes, teams, and external partners responsible for moving educational concepts from intake through instructional design, SME collaboration, multimedia development, copyediting, LMS build, quality assurance, accessibility review, launch readiness, maintenance, and post-launch improvement.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop assigned staff, including instructional design, multimedia, copyediting, production, and/or other education technology staff as assigned. Encourage a work environment that promotes inclusion and belonging of all staff, supports professional growth, sets clear objectives, evaluates performance, and builds the skills needed to meet current and future goals.
- Improve the efficiency and scalability of AAP’s course production processes. Identify bottlenecks, clarify handoffs, improve documentation, standardize templates and workflows, reduce rework, define QA and accessibility expectations, and ensure that digital learning products can be produced and maintained consistently.
- Evaluate current and future education offerings through a product lens, including learner need, audience fit, user experience, instructional value, business model, revenue opportunity, engagement, retention, accessibility, scalability, and differentiation in the pediatric education market.
- Define and apply market strategy and ideal customer profile principles to AAP education products. Help identify target learners, buyers, influencers, institutional customers, audience segments, value propositions, pricing and packaging considerations, competitive positioning, and product-market fit.
- Use learner research, market research, customer feedback, competitive analysis, product analytics, and revenue data to guide education product strategy, platform decisions, course redesign, portfolio prioritization, and commercialization opportunities.
- Develop and implement metrics to assess educational, operational, learner-experience, and business impact of education technology solutions and learning products. Use data to support continuous improvement, product decisions, revenue strategy, and leadership reporting.
- Ensure education technology solutions and learning products are accessible, inclusive, and aligned with AAP values of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Promote access for diverse learners, including members and nonmembers, domestic and global audiences, different career stages, and varied learning needs.
- Develop and oversee assigned budgets, evaluate and report on variances, ensure fiscally responsible use of resources, and support business planning for education technology investments, platform initiatives, product development, and innovation pilots.
- Serve as a senior member of the Education and Global Health Group leadership team, contributing to strategy, planning, operational decision-making, revenue growth, product innovation, and cross-functional alignment.
- Ensure the Education and Global Health Group serves as a catalyst for AAP-wide adoption of innovative education tools, technologies, learner-centered practices, scalable production models, and sustainable business approaches.
- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with key internal and external partners, including staff, physician leaders, subject matter experts, vendors, consultants, funders, technology partners, and peer organizations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Experience supervising staff, managing budgets, and working with vendors or external partners.
- Excellent leadership, verbal/written communication, collaboration, diplomacy, change management, project management, budget management, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to think strategically; identify and diagnose complex problems that span multiple systems, workflows, teams, and audiences; translate abstract strategy into practical requirements and project plans; lead teams through change; manage competing priorities; communicate effectively with various internal and external constituents; use data, research, and market evidence to guide decisions; and promote and maintain a positive and cooperative team-oriented work environment with a commitment to fostering a culture where everyone feels valued and respected.
