For more than 170 years, The Hanover has been committed to delivering on our promises and being there when it matters the most. We live our values every day, demonstrating we CARE through our values, Sustainability initiatives and inclusive corporate culture.

Our Management Liability Claims Team is currently seeking a Senior D&O Consultant Specialized Claims to join our growing team. This position can be fully remote or hybrid at one of The Hanover’s Claims office locations. This is a Full Time/Exempt role.

Position Overview:

The Hanover Management Liability Claims Team currently has an open claim professional position, specifically involving Directors & Officers Liability (D&O) claims. The Senior Consultant Specialized Claims is expected to be a senior claims expert responsible for managing the most complex and high-exposure D&O claims across the country. As a D&O claims professional, you will be responsible for handling a caseload of claims-made Private and Non-Profit D&O claims from inception to final disposition. In this role, additional opportunities to handle Employment Practices Liability, Fiduciary Liability, and Financial Institutions Liability claims are anticipated. As these claims are often in litigation, experience handling litigated Management Liability claims matters through resolution, and strong management of defense counsel is required.

In addition to direct claim handling, the Senior Consultant Specialized Claims supports policy development, implements direction from Claims Handling leadership, and partners with Underwriting and other internal and external partners. The position offers opportunities to deepen expertise in specialized lines of business and contribute meaningfully to claims outcomes through strategic decision-making and expert consultation.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Independently manage the company’s most complex, high-severity D&O claims with significant financial exposure, including sensitive investigations and litigated matters.
  • Appropriately and accurately analyze and determine coverage, liability, and damages based upon the facts of each claim. Exercise flexibility in analyzing and applying numerous D&O coverage forms and endorsements to each unique claim situation.
  • Communicate clear and thorough written position(s) to Insureds and other required parties on coverage, liability, damages, and other issues.
  • Develop comprehensive claim files and ensure compliance with regulatory and internal standards.
  • Demonstrate expert-level financial acumen by setting appropriate expense and indemnity reserves and monitoring reserves on a regular basis for any needed adjustment.
  • Manage litigation costs through proactive retention, management, direction, and oversight of counsel. Actively participate in the development of litigation strategy, expense budgeting, and resolution planning for each claim.
  • Collaborate with legal counsel to resolve high-profile cases and shape claims strategy; develop and implement resolution strategies through negotiations to achieve high-quality outcomes.
  • Represent the company at trials, mediations, settlement conferences, and arbitrations as required.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME), supporting departmental initiatives, projects, and policy development.
  • Provide superior customer service to the company’s insureds and agents as well as internal partners.
  • Drive interdepartmental collaboration to resolve high-impact cases and improve outcomes.
  • Present cases to management for expense or indemnity reserve authority above established authority levels.
  • Attend industry events and contribute to thought leadership through special projects.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Juris Doctor preferred.
  • Minimum of five years handling litigated Private and Non-Profit D&O coverage and/or liability cases as defense counsel or claims handler.
  • Additional experience handling Employment Practices Liability, Fiduciary Liability, and Financial Institutions Liability is a plus.
  • Maintain appropriate state adjuster licenses and complete required continuing education to stay current with regulatory and industry standards.
  • Candidates should demonstrate the following:
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to tailor messaging to diverse audiences;
    • Exceptional negotiation and advanced technical claim handling skills, including knowledge of insurance coverage issues;
    • Superior time, task prioritization, and desk management skills;
    • Efficient use of technology and commitment to thorough and contemporaneous documentation of claim files;
    • Ability to make informed, confident decisions independently with only moderate supervision while recognizing appropriate issues requiring escalation;
    • Discipline, results-oriented thinking, and ability to focus on bottom line results;
    • Adaptability in changing environments and evolving priorities;
    • Strong collaboration and commitment to teamwork across departments and levels.
