Job Title: Senior Electrical Certification & Qualification Engineer
Job Description
The Senior Electrical Certification & Qualification Engineer leads the evaluation, qualification, testing, and certification of high-amperage power distribution and protection components used in industrial chiller systems. This role focuses on resolving supply chain constraints by qualifying alternate electrical components, defining certification strategies, overseeing testing programs, and ensuring regulatory compliance with UL and related standards. The position serves as the technical authority on electrical component qualification and certification, with an emphasis on component-level work rather than product design.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical lead for certification and qualification of high-current electrical power distribution and protection devices used in industrial chiller systems.
- Develop comprehensive qualification strategies for molded-case and insulated-case circuit breakers, large disconnect switches, fuse blocks and fuse holders, power fuses, lugs, connectors, operating mechanisms, rotary handles, and related accessories.
- Evaluate alternate-source components and determine their suitability for deployment within existing product platforms.
- Assess risks associated with component substitutions, including impacts on existing UL listings and certifications.
- Define qualification paths for non-listed or alternate-source components, including products sourced internationally.
- Act as the primary technical interface with UL, certification bodies, and independent test laboratories.
- Develop and execute detailed test plans required to achieve component or system-level certification.
- Interpret applicable UL standards and identify certification requirements for proposed component substitutions.
- Support efforts to obtain product-specific UL listings, component recognition, qualification of self-manufactured components and accessories, and certification of device-and-accessory combinations not currently approved together.
- Define electrical testing requirements and acceptance criteria for high-power distribution and protection equipment.
- Select, engage, and manage external certification and high-power testing laboratories, including scheduling and scope definition.
- Coordinate test schedules, witness testing activities, and resolve technical issues that arise during certification programs.
- Evaluate key electrical characteristics such as interrupting ratings, short-circuit performance, SCCR implications, thermal performance, accessory compatibility, and device coordination.
- Compare alternate-source devices against incumbent products from major suppliers and provide clear technical assessments.
- Provide engineering and supply chain leadership with concise technical recommendations regarding qualification feasibility, certification risks, and implementation timelines.
- Support the development of long-term alternate sourcing strategies for critical electrical protection equipment.
- Collaborate with supply chain teams to mitigate ongoing availability challenges related to high-amperage circuit breakers, disconnect switches, fuse systems, and related components.
- Work closely with cross-functional groups including Supply Chain, Product Engineering, Regulatory Compliance, Chiller Engineering, and Mechanical Design teams.
- Focus on electrical component qualification while partnering with internal teams responsible for packaging, mechanical integration, and system-level validation.
- Independently develop certification strategies and test plans that balance technical requirements, timelines, and business priorities.
- Translate complex compliance and certification requirements into practical, actionable recommendations for non-specialist stakeholders.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
- 10+ years of experience with low-voltage power distribution and protection equipment.
- Direct experience qualifying, testing, certifying, or developing high-amperage circuit breakers, ideally in the 10002000A range.
- Hands-on experience with disconnect switches, fuse blocks, fuse systems, power distribution equipment, motor control centers, switchgear, or similar industrial power equipment.
- Strong knowledge of UL certification processes, standards, and testing methodologies for low-voltage power distribution and protection devices.
- Experience working directly with certification agencies and high-power test laboratories.
- Ability to independently develop and execute certification strategies and detailed test plans.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex compliance and technical topics in clear, practical terms.
- Expertise in UL certifications and component qualification for circuit breakers, high-power systems, and related devices.
- Proven ability to coordinate high-power testing programs and manage test activities with external laboratories.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working for circuit breaker manufacturers, switchgear manufacturers, electrical component OEMs, certification laboratories, or equivalent standards organizations.
- Experience with SCCR analysis and high-power interrupt testing.
- Background in power system component certification and industrial control systems.
- Experience with alternate component qualification programs for power distribution and protection equipment.
- Familiarity with global component sourcing and qualification strategies.
- Experience serving as a subject matter expert in UL certification and test coordination.
- Applied experience with UL standards such as UL 489 (Molded-Case and Insulated-Case Circuit Breakers), UL 1066 (Low-Voltage Power Circuit Breakers), UL 98 (Enclosed and Dead-Front Switches), UL 977 (Fused Power-Circuit Devices), UL 248 (Low-Voltage Fuses), UL 4248 (Fuseholders), and UL 486A-486B (Wire Connectors and Soldering Lugs).
