The Senior Electrical Certification & Qualification Engineer leads the evaluation, qualification, testing, and certification of highamperage power distribution and protection components used in industrial chiller systems. This role focuses on resolving supply chain constraints by qualifying alternate electrical components, securing new UL certifications and listings, and ensuring regulatory compliance for components not currently approved for existing applications. The position serves as the technical authority for electrical component qualification and certification, developing strategies, overseeing testing programs, coordinating with UL and thirdparty labs, and advising engineering and supply chain teams on the technical feasibility and risks of alternate-sourced electrical protection equipment. This is not a product design role; the emphasis is on component qualification, certification strategy, testing oversight, and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities- Serve as the technical lead for the certification and qualification of high-current electrical power distribution and protection devices used in industrial chiller systems.
- Develop comprehensive qualification strategies for molded-case and insulated-case circuit breakers, large disconnect switches, fuse blocks and fuse holders, power fuses, lugs, connectors, operating mechanisms, rotary handles, and related accessories.
- Evaluate alternate-source electrical components and determine their suitability for deployment within existing product platforms.
- Assess risks associated with component substitutions, including potential impacts on existing UL listings, certifications, and overall system compliance.
- Define clear qualification paths for non-listed or alternate-source components, including products sourced internationally.
- Act as the primary technical interface with UL, certification bodies, and independent high-power test laboratories.
- Develop, document, and execute detailed test plans required to achieve component-level or system-level certification.
- Interpret and apply applicable UL standards to identify certification requirements for proposed component substitutions and alternate sourcing strategies.
- Support efforts to obtain product-specific UL listings, component recognition, qualification of self-manufactured components and accessories, and certification of device-and-accessory combinations not currently approved together.
- Define electrical testing requirements and acceptance criteria for high-amperage power distribution and protection equipment.
- Select, engage, and manage external certification and high-power testing laboratories, including negotiating test scope and ensuring test readiness.
- Coordinate test schedules, witness testing activities, and resolve technical issues that arise during certification and qualification programs.
- Evaluate key electrical characteristics such as interrupting ratings, short-circuit performance, SCCR implications, thermal performance, accessory compatibility, and device coordination.
- Compare alternate-source devices against incumbent products from major suppliers and assess technical equivalence, performance, and compliance implications.
- Provide engineering and supply chain leadership with clear, data-driven technical recommendations regarding qualification feasibility, certification risks, and implementation timelines.
- Support the development of long-term alternate sourcing strategies for critical electrical protection equipment to mitigate ongoing availability challenges.
- Collaborate closely with supply chain teams focused on addressing supply constraints and ensuring continuity of supply for critical components.
- Work in partnership with Product Engineering, Regulatory Compliance, Chiller Engineering, and Mechanical Design teams to align electrical component qualification with packaging, mechanical integration, and system-level validation requirements.
- Translate complex compliance and certification requirements into practical guidance and recommendations for cross-functional stakeholders.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
- 10+ years of experience with low-voltage power distribution and protection equipment.
- Direct experience qualifying, testing, certifying, or developing high-amperage circuit breakers, ideally in the 10002000A range.
- Hands-on experience with disconnect switches, fuse blocks, fuse systems, power distribution equipment, motor control centers, and switchgear or similar industrial power equipment.
- Strong knowledge of UL certification processes, standards, and testing methodologies relevant to low-voltage power distribution and protection devices.
- Experience working directly with certification agencies and high-power test laboratories.
- Ability to independently develop certification strategies and detailed test plans for electrical components and systems.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex compliance and regulatory requirements into clear, practical business recommendations.
- Expertise in UL certifications, circuit breakers, high-voltage or high-power systems, test engineering, component qualification, and test coordination.
- Experience working for circuit breaker manufacturers, switchgear manufacturers, electrical component OEMs, certification laboratories, or equivalent standards organizations.
- Experience with SCCR analysis and high-power interrupt testing for power distribution and protection equipment.
- Background in power system component certification and industrial control systems.
- Experience leading or participating in alternate component qualification programs.
- Familiarity with global component sourcing and qualification strategies for electrical protection equipment.
- Experience applying and interpreting UL 489 for molded-case and insulated-case circuit breakers.
- Experience applying and interpreting UL 1066 for low-voltage power circuit breakers.
- Experience applying and interpreting UL 98 for enclosed and dead-front switches.
- Experience applying and interpreting UL 977 for fused power-circuit devices.
- Experience applying and interpreting UL 248 for low-voltage fuses.
- Experience applying and interpreting UL 4248 for fuseholders.
- Experience applying and interpreting UL 486A486B for wire connectors and soldering lugs.
