A Day in the Life
Onterris is seeking a Senior Environmental Engineer with NY PE to provide technical engineering and project leadership in support of our environmental assessment, remediation, and National Brownfields practice. This position will primarily support our New York team while collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams across the United States.
Our team focus is Brownfields. Our work spans the full lifecycle of contaminated-site assessment and remediation. The successful candidate will be involved in environmental due diligence, site characterization, and development of investigation strategies. The role also provides opportunities to carry projects beyond assessment into alternatives evaluation, engineering design, demolition and redevelopment planning, remedial implementation, construction, and site closure.
Our project portfolio includes unique work that can be difficult to encounter elsewhere in environmental consulting. Our teams are currently supporting the assessment and cleanup of historic sites ranging from World War II-era military properties in the Aleutian Islands to former oil and gas exploration sites, and properties associated with historic gold-mining activities in Alaska. These assignments present unusual environmental and logistical challenges, including remote access, rugged terrain, limited infrastructure, weather constraints, and short field seasons. For applicants interested in field participation, opportunities may include travel to the Aleutian Islands and other parts of Alaska.
In New York, our work includes the assessment and redevelopment of large former industrial and commercial properties where environmental investigation and remediation may intersect with demolition, regulated building materials, site grading, infrastructure improvements, fill management, wetlands, and future development plans. These projects provide opportunities to work across multiple phases of a site's environmental lifecycle and to solve practical problems at the intersection of environmental assessment, remediation, engineering, construction, and redevelopment.
The successful candidate will work alongside engineers, geologists, environmental scientists, chemists, data specialists, project managers, and field professionals on projects involving a broad range of contaminants and environmental challenges, including petroleum, chlorinated solvents, metals, PCBs, vapor intrusion, contaminated soil and groundwater, regulated building materials, demolition, and remedial construction.
Responsibilities may range from planning and managing environmental investigations to developing engineering evaluations and designs, preparing construction documents, providing technical review, supporting remedial implementation, and serving as a lead engineer on complex projects. The position offers a blend of independent technical work, multidisciplinary collaboration, project management, and field involvement.
Our New York team is highly collaborative and works in a fast-paced environment where staff routinely support one another across disciplines. This position offers the opportunity to take on meaningful technical responsibility, help strengthen and expand our engineering capabilities, and work on projects that are geographically diverse, and technically challenging. Our team is growing and this is an exciting opportunity for career advancement for the right individual.
The annual compensation range for this role is $120,000 to $175,000, in addition to an annual bonus, commensurate with experience, skills, and geographic location.
Rochester, New York is the preferred location for this position. Qualified candidates located elsewhere in New York or the northeastern United States may also be considered, provided they hold an active New York Professional Engineer license and are able to travel periodically to the Rochester office and project sites.
To thrive in this role, you’ll be comfortable taking ownership of the following responsibilities:
- Lead and support environmental assessment, site characterization, remediation, demolition, and redevelopment projects from investigation through implementation and closure.
- Perform and direct engineering evaluations and remedial design activities, including calculations, plans, specifications, bid documents, cost estimates, and other technical deliverables.
- Plan and oversee Phase I and Phase II ESAs, environmental investigations, field programs, and evaluation of environmental and subsurface data.
- Evaluate civil, structural, architectural, and infrastructure plans as they relate to environmental conditions, remediation, and redevelopment.
- Manage project scopes, budgets, schedules, subcontractors, and multidisciplinary teams, and coordinate with clients, regulators, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
- Prepare and review work plans, remedial alternatives evaluations, engineering reports, technical memoranda, and final project documentation.
- Provide technical review, QA/QC, engineering oversight during implementation, and mentorship to junior and mid-level staff.
- Support proposal development, fee estimation, business development activities, site visits, and other project needs as required.
Your Expertise and Skills
These requirements reflect the knowledge, skills and abilities that help you do your best work here.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental, civil, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited four-year college or university program.
- Approximately 8 or more years of progressively responsible environmental engineering or environmental consulting experience, with substantial experience in contaminated-site assessment and remediation.
- Current and active Professional Engineer (PE) license in New York State.
- Demonstrated ability to independently perform, direct, and review environmental engineering work and exercise sound professional judgment.
- Experience across the contaminated-site lifecycle, including due diligence, Phase I/II ESAs, site characterization, remedial alternatives evaluation, design, implementation, and closure.
- Experience with remedial design, engineering calculations, construction documents, drawings and specifications, cost estimating, and remedial implementation.
- Demonstrated project management experience, including scopes, budgets, schedules, subcontractors, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong understanding of environmental regulations and engineering standards, with the ability to interpret and apply requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
- Strong technical writing, communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
- Ability and willingness to travel periodically for project needs

“There are not many places where a toxicologist can be boots-on-the-ground at an environmental emergency one day and deep in a human health risk assessment or litigation the next, but this company is one of them, and honestly, that breadth is what makes me love the work. We are a team of scientists with a broad range of talents and experiences who genuinely take the mission to heart, because protecting people and communities from chemical hazards is not abstract here; it is exactly why we show up every day. The culture reflects that shared commitment in the best way: collaborative, rigorous, and truly motivated by the impact we make together.” - Andre Richardson, Consulting
