At MiniMed, you can begin a lifelong career of exploration and innovation, while helping make a difference in the lives of people living with diabetes around the globe. You'll lead with purpose, breaking down barriers to innovation for a more connected, compassionate world.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Mobile Architect to define and lead the mobile application architecture for next-generation MedTech products and connected medical devices. This role requires deep expertise across native iOS, native Android, and Flutter, combined with hands-on experience integrating mobile applications with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Near Field Communication (NFC) devices.

The Mobile Architect will establish scalable, secure, reliable, and maintainable mobile architectures that support regulated healthcare environments, connected medical devices, and patient- and clinician-facing applications. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable defining enterprise architecture and diving into complex device connectivity, mobile platform, and integration challenges.

Location: Minneapolis, MN, San Diego, CA, or Northridge, CA (hybrid, 3 days onsite per week), with approximately 25% travel to our Northridge headquarters.

Key Responsibilities

Mobile Architecture & Technical Leadership

  • Establish architectural patterns, frameworks, coding standards, reusable components, and engineering best practices.
  • Define the overall mobile architecture strategy across iOS, Android, and Flutter.
  • Determine when functionality should be implemented natively versus Flutter.
  • Design scalable architectures supporting multiple device types, and product lines.
  • Lead technical design reviews and architectural decisions across mobile engineering teams.
  • Identify technical risks, dependencies, scalability concerns, and opportunities for modernization.
  • Mentor senior engineers and provide technical direction across mobile development teams.

iOS & Android Native Development

  • Provide architectural leadership for Swift/SwiftUI/UIKit applications on iOS.
  • Provide architectural leadership for Kotlin/Jetpack Compose/Android SDK applications.
  • Define platform-specific abstractions and integrations where native capabilities are required.
  • Establish strategies for handling OS-version differences, device fragmentation, background execution, permissions, and lifecycle management.
  • Guide teams in building high-performance, resilient mobile applications.

Flutter Architecture

  • Define and maintain a scalable Flutter/Dart architecture for cross-platform applications.
  • Establish patterns for state management, dependency injection, navigation, networking, persistence, and native platform integration.
  • Design Flutter-to-native bridges and platform channels for capabilities that require iOS or Android APIs.
  • Determine appropriate boundaries between shared Flutter code and native platform implementations.
  • Establish reusable Flutter components and shared mobile libraries.

BLE & Connected Medical Devices

  • Architect reliable communication between mobile applications and BLE-enabled medical devices and sensors.
  • Design BLE discovery, pairing, connection, service/characteristic management, data exchange, reconnection, and error-handling strategies.
  • Work with device engineering teams to define and consume BLE GATT profiles and protocols.
  • Address BLE challenges including background operation, connection stability, intermittent connectivity, device state management, and power consumption.
  • Design robust handling of medical-device telemetry, commands, configuration, and firmware-related workflows.
  • Collaborate on device interoperability and end-to-end connectivity testing.

NFC

  • Architect mobile integrations with NFC-enabled medical devices, accessories, tags, and authentication workflows.
  • Work with iOS Core NFC and Android NFC APIs.
  • Design secure NFC communication and data exchange patterns.
  • Address platform-specific NFC capabilities and limitations.
  • Ensure appropriate handling of device discovery, authentication, validation, and error scenarios.

MedTech, Security & Compliance

  • Design mobile solutions appropriate for regulated healthcare and medical-device environments.
  • Apply secure development practices for protected health information (PHI), personally identifiable information (PII), credentials, device data, and authentication tokens.
  • Partner with security, quality, regulatory, and clinical teams to ensure architecture supports applicable requirements.
  • Contribute to software lifecycle processes, risk management, traceability, validation, and documentation as required for medical-device software.
  • Design secure storage, encryption, authentication, authorization, certificate/key management, and secure communications.
  • Ensure mobile architecture supports auditability, observability, and controlled software releases.

APIs, Cloud & Enterprise Integration

  • Define mobile integration patterns for REST/GraphQL APIs and backend services.
  • Establish networking, caching, synchronization, offline-first, and data persistence strategies.
  • Collaborate with backend, cloud, device, firmware, QA, cybersecurity, and product teams.
  • Define contracts and interfaces between mobile applications, cloud platforms, and connected devices.

Quality, Reliability & DevOps

  • Establish mobile testing strategies covering unit, integration, UI, device, connectivity, and end-to-end testing.
  • Define CI/CD architecture for iOS, Android, and Flutter applications.
  • Establish release management strategies for App Store and Google Play distribution.
  • Promote automated testing, static analysis, code quality, dependency management, and security scanning.
  • Define monitoring, logging, diagnostics, crash reporting, and telemetry strategies.
  • Ensure architecture supports reliable operation in real-world clinical and device environments.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical discipline.
  • 10+ years of software/mobile development experience, with significant experience in mobile architecture.
  • Or, advanced degree and 8+ years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with REST APIs, cloud services, databases, and distributed systems.
  • Strong understanding of mobile CI/CD and automated testing.
  • Excellent technical communication, architecture documentation, and cross-functional leadership skills.
  • Experience developing connected medical devices, digital health, healthcare, diagnostics, monitoring, or medical-device applications.
  • Experience with FDA-regulated software development or similar medical-device regulatory environments.
  • Familiarity with IEC 62304, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, and medical-device software lifecycle processes.
  • Experience with HIPAA-related security and privacy considerations.
  • Experience with medical device connectivity protocols and standards.
