Position Summary
EBI Consulting is seeking an experienced Sr Project Manager-PHIUS Certified Verifier to lead and grow our PHIUS verification services, primarily supporting multifamily new construction and substantial rehabilitation projects. This senior technical and client-facing role will manage an established project portfolio from design-phase planning through construction inspections, performance testing, documentation, and final certification. The successful candidate will combine building-science expertise and hands-on field experience with project management, staff development, client relationship management, and business development to expand the practice while maintaining consistent technical quality.
The position reports directly to the Energy & Sustainability Group Manager and can be a fully remote or hybrid position, depending on where the successful candidate is located. This position requires approximately 30% travel, with the potential for additional travel based on project needs. Most travel will be to client sites in the greater Boston area and throughout Massachusetts, with occasional air travel to other markets. Candidates must already be based in the Boston area and comfortable with both local and overnight travel to be considered.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as the lead PHIUS Certified Verifier for multifamily and other applicable large-building projects; develop verification scopes, inspection and testing plans, budgets, schedules, staffing plans, and fee proposals.
- Review drawings, specifications, energy models, and certification documentation to identify requirements and risks; coordinate inspection milestones, testing responsibilities, and deliverables with owners, design teams, contractors, consultants, and PHIUS reviewers.
- Conduct or supervise construction inspections and performance testing for building enclosures, air barriers, insulation, thermal bridges, windows and doors, HVAC, ventilation, and domestic hot-water systems; document deficiencies and verify corrective actions.
- Maintain quality-assurance workbooks, inspection and testing records, photographs, deficiency logs, equipment records, and final certification submissions, including applicable co-requisite programs; resolve reviewer comments and outstanding items.
- Manage concurrent projects to achieve certification objectives while meeting budget, schedule, quality, and client-service expectations.
- Train and mentor technical staff, establish standardized delivery and quality-control procedures, and monitor changes to PHIUS standards and related program requirements.
- Grow the service line through client relationships, proposals, new market opportunities, and industry participation; build team capacity, improve delivery efficiency, and maintain independent verification standards.
- Collaborate with the sustainability team on complementary green-building certifications and applicable state or local high-performance building requirements.
Qualifications and Capabilities
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, building science, construction management, environmental science, or a related discipline; substantial directly applicable experience may be considered in place of a specific degree.
- Active PHIUS Certified Verifier credential with the Multifamily Designation is required. RESNET HERS Rater, HERS Modeler, or Rating Field Inspector credentials, applicable ENERGY STAR and RESNET multifamily training, and BPI, commissioning, or building-envelope testing credentials are preferred.
- At least five years of experience in building science, energy efficiency, commissioning, sustainability consulting, construction quality assurance, or a related field, including substantial recent PHIUS experience. Five or more years of direct multifamily PHIUS verification experience is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple multifamily PHIUS projects through construction and final certification, with thorough knowledge of verification protocols, quality-assurance documentation, and co-requisite program requirements.
- Strong knowledge of high-performance building enclosures, air barriers, insulation, thermal bridging, fenestration, HVAC, ventilation, domestic hot-water systems, and building durability; hands-on multifamily inspection, large-building airtightness testing, and mechanical ventilation testing experience.
- Ability to interpret architectural and mechanical drawings, specifications, submittals, construction details, energy-modeling outputs, and equipment data. Experience with WUFI Passive, REM/Rate, Ekotrope, EnergyPlus, or comparable platforms is preferred.
- Strong project-management, written and verbal communication, and client relationship skills, including budgeting, scheduling, resource allocation, quality control, and explaining technical requirements to varied audiences.
