Sr SAP SD & Vertex Functional Consultant - Remote with some possible travel

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced SAP SD & Vertex Functional Consultant with strong hands-on expertise in SAP Sales & Distribution (SD), Order-to-Cash (OTC), and functional configuration within Vertex O Series.

The ideal candidate must have experience configuring and maintaining the Vertex tax engine itself, not simply integrating Vertex with SAP. This includes configuring tax rules, product taxability, jurisdictions, exemptions, tax determination, and troubleshooting tax calculation issues across both SAP and Vertex.

Key Responsibilities

SAP SD Functional Configuration

• Configure and support SAP SD Order-to-Cash processes, including sales orders, pricing, deliveries, billing, returns, and credit/debit memos.
  
• Configure pricing procedures, condition types, tax determination, and billing functionality.
  
• Support integration between SAP SD, FI, MM, and Vertex.
  
• Troubleshoot SAP pricing, billing, and tax calculation issues.
  
• Develop functional specifications and support testing and enhancements.
  

Vertex Functional Configuration & Administration

• Perform hands-on functional configuration directly within Vertex O Series, including tax rules, taxability mappings, and tax determination settings.
  
• Configure and maintain product and customer taxability classifications.
  
• Configure taxability rules, exceptions, overrides, and exemption processing.
  
• Maintain jurisdiction assignments and location-based tax determination settings.
  
• Configure and support sales tax, use tax, and applicable transaction tax calculations.
  
• Maintain Vertex taxpayer/company configuration and organizational mappings.
  
• Configure taxability drivers and mappings between SAP transaction data and Vertex.
  
• Troubleshoot incorrect tax calculations directly within the Vertex application.
  
• Support Vertex tax content updates, configuration changes, and regression testing.
  
• Work with corporate tax teams to translate tax requirements into Vertex configuration.
  

SAP–Vertex Integration

• Configure and support SAP-to-Vertex tax determination interfaces.
  
• Understand SAP tax procedures, tax codes, condition types, and external tax calculation processes.
  
• Troubleshoot transaction data mapping, tax calculation discrepancies, and interface failures.
  
• Support SAP ECC and S/4HANA integration with Vertex.
  
• Perform end-to-end testing from SAP sales order through billing and Vertex tax calculation.
  

Required Qualifications

• 8+ years of SAP functional consulting experience, with strong SAP SD expertise.
  
• 3–5+ years of hands-on Vertex O Series functional configuration experience.
  
• Proven ability to independently configure tax rules, product taxability, exemptions, and tax determination within Vertex.
  
• Strong experience with SAP SD pricing, billing, tax procedures, and Order-to-Cash.
  
• Experience configuring and supporting SAP–Vertex integrations.
  
• Understanding of U.S. sales and use tax requirements.
  
• Experience troubleshooting tax calculation issues within both SAP and Vertex.
  
• Experience working directly with business tax and finance teams.
  
• Strong functional design, testing, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
  

Preferred Qualifications

• SAP S/4HANA implementation or migration experience.
  
• Vertex O Series implementation, upgrade, or migration experience.
  
• Experience with Vertex Cloud.
  
• Experience supporting multiple legal entities and complex tax jurisdictions.
  
• Knowledge of tax exemptions, customer classifications, and product taxability.
  
• Experience with SAP FI integration and tax-related financial postings.
  

Critical Requirement

Candidates must possess hands-on functional configuration expertise within Vertex O Series, in addition to SAP SD configuration and SAP–Vertex integration experience.

Candidates whose Vertex experience is limited to interface integration, testing, or production monitoring without direct Vertex tax engine configuration will not meet the requirements.
