Success requires deep knowledge of our systems and processes today, along with strong experience across the full-stack Microsoft development ecosystem, healthcare EDI, SQL Server, APIs, and distributed application design. But just as important is the ability to look beyond what’s already built and help design the systems and processes of tomorrow. You’ll be a voice that explains complex technical choices clearly, an architect who raises the bar for our systems, and a mentor who helps our engineering team do the same.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, integrate, and support end-to-end healthcare applications across intuitive, accessible user interfaces, APIs, business services, integrations, and SQL Server data layers using C#, .NET Framework/.NET, ASP.NET, Web API, and modern front-end technologies.
- Build and evolve secure, reliable, and scalable APIs and microservices that support healthcare operations, data exchange, and system interoperability.
- Design, optimize, and support SQL Server databases, data models, queries, and stored procedures to improve performance, reliability, and maintainability.
- Develop and maintain integrations for healthcare EDI and X12 transactions, including 275, 278, 834, 837, 835, 999, and TA1, using standards such as REST/JSON and SOAP/XML where appropriate.
- Analyze legacy applications, workflows, database structures, and integrations to uncover business logic, document the current state, and determine what should be modernized, refactored, or replaced.
- Work directly with stakeholders to translate business requirements, operational rules, and system dependencies into practical technical designs, architectural decisions, and well-defined development plans.
- Improve CI/CD pipelines and deploy, monitor, and troubleshoot applications across Azure and hybrid environments to make builds, testing, deployments, and production support faster and more reliable.
- Improve solution quality through code reviews, automated testing, performance tuning, secure coding, technical documentation, and effective defect resolution.
- Use AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully to improve developer productivity, code quality, and delivery velocity.
- Mentor other developers, contribute to architecture and technology-roadmap decisions, and help establish pragmatic.
- Partner with product, QA, and business teams throughout delivery to align technical decisions, priorities, and expectations with business outcomes.
Why this Role Matters:
Healthcare platforms carry years of operational knowledge, client requirements, and regulatory obligations. Modernizing them well means preserving the business logic that still matters while simplifying what no longer serves the organization. This role helps turn that understanding into secure, reliable, and maintainable applications, user experiences, services, integrations, and data solutions.
When this work is done well, our teams can deliver capabilities faster, integrations and operations become more reliable, and the systems supporting specialty care become more secure, resilient, and adaptable. That gives Emboss Specialty a stronger technology foundation while improving the experience of the members, providers, clients, and internal teams who depend on it every day. Together, those outcomes help make specialty healthcare work better for everyone.
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of professional experience in application development, including senior-level ownership of complex healthcare solutions.
- Deep proficiency across the Microsoft development stack, including C#, .NET Framework/.NET, ASP.NET, Web API or MVC, Visual Studio, and SQL Server.
- Strong experience designing RESTful services, APIs, microservices, and distributed architectures, with a solid understanding of security, resiliency, scalability, and asynchronous processing.
- Proven ability to design, deploy, and support applications and services across on-premises, hybrid, and cloud architectures, including secure integration, configuration, monitoring, resiliency, and production troubleshooting.
- Hands-on healthcare EDI experience, including X12 transaction processing, with depth in transactions such as 275, 278, 834, 837, 835, 999, and TA1.
- Demonstrated experience analyzing and reverse-engineering legacy applications, extracting embedded business logic, and turning that understanding into practical modernization strategies.
- Strong SQL Server skills, including T-SQL, data and schema design, stored procedures, query optimization, and performance tuning.
- A track record of collaborating across technical and nontechnical teams, explaining architectural decisions clearly, mentoring developers, and leading complex work with a high degree of autonomy.
- Additional experience that may add value includes modern front-end and UI development; payer or health-plan solutions; workflow automation; business-rules engines; FHIR-based APIs; ETL and data mapping; authentication and authorization models; and HIPAA considerations.
The Language You'll Speak:
You will not need to know every platform or transaction on day one, but you should be comfortable learning and working across new technical and healthcare.
- Microsoft development: C#, .NET Framework/.NET, ASP.NET, Web API, MVC, Visual Studio, SQL Server, T-SQL, Azure DevOps, and Git.
- Architecture and integration: REST/JSON, SOAP/XML, APIs, microservices, distributed systems, CI/CD, application resiliency, authentication, authorization, and secure coding.
- Healthcare interoperability: EDI, X12, 275, 278, 834, 837, 835, 999, TA1, FHIR, HIPAA, CMS guidelines, and health-plan specifications.
- User-interface development: JavaScript, React, HTML, CSS, responsive design, accessibility, component-based development, and common browser and web-application patterns.
- Legacy modernization: reverse engineering, current-state documentation, business-rule discovery, refactoring, performance tuning, data mapping, and cloud design.
Your Success Metrics:
Success in this role will be measured by the answers to a few practical questions:
- Are the applications and services you own becoming more reliable, secure, performant, and maintainable?
- Are we modernizing legacy systems in a way that preserves critical business logic while reducing complexity and technical risk?
- Are our APIs, microservices, databases, and healthcare integrations easier to understand, test, deploy, monitor, and support?
- Are software changes moving through development, review, testing, and deployment with greater consistency and fewer avoidable defects?
- Are engineering standards, technical documentation, and architectural decisions becoming clearer and more useful to the broader team?
- Are other developers becoming more effective because of the guidance, reviews, and examples this role provides?
- Are business, product, QA, and engineering teams more aligned because technical tradeoffs and delivery expectations are communicated clearly?
Location:
- Position is remote and the location of candidate is flexible within the U.S.
