The Opportunity
Settlor is a fast-growing software company focused on building innovative solutions for the title, escrow, and real estate industries. We are looking for a Senior Web Application Developer who is not only experienced, but truly passionate about coding - someone who is always curious about what is possible with the latest features of our chosen frameworks and languages, and who would rather understand a system than just extend it.
As a Senior Web Application Developer, your impact is immediate. You will drive the design and implementation of the real estate applications at the center of our platform, working closely with the engineers who built the framework, the design patterns, and the back end of our software. You won't just close tickets; you will shape architecture, raise the bar in code review, and level up the engineers around you. Our team demonstrates and values technical thought leadership, and this is a role where that leadership is expected and rewarded.
We are a small but mighty team, which means the scope here is real. The decisions you make about structure, performance, and practice will still be visible in this codebase years from now. If the idea of working hard, learning new things every day, and being part of a nimble and savvy product team sounds appealing, we want to hear from you.
This is a hybrid position based in Denver, Colorado. Typical office hours are 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM; Monday and Thursday at home, Tuesday and Friday in the office, with Wednesday as scheduled weekly/monthly.
Why Join Settlor?
- Impact: Your work directly influences our customers' experience with our platform and our company and is foundational to our long-term growth and evolution.
- Culture: A collaborative, "no-ego" environment where we celebrate wins and learn from losses. We purposefully operate in a hybrid-office environment because we believe in the power of teams and relationships, and we have learned that both are best built and nurtured in-person.
- Growth: Often hard to find in the age of A.I. and constant turnover with software engineers, we invest in professional and personal growth as demonstrated by our high-retention of engineers who started their careers with us and have found little reason to look elsewhere.
- Customer-Centric: We build for the long haul by prioritizing solutions to real-world challenges for our customers. Your work ensures we evolve in lockstep with our users' needs, creating a product they truly love and trust.
- Technical Thought Leadership: Architecture and design patterns are discussed openly here, and senior engineers have a real seat at the table on technology selection.
- Self-funded and privately-held: Not looking for hyper-growth on an aggressive timeline. We want to build an organization thoughtfully and strategically, with solid processes and culture.
What You’ll Do
- Architecture & Design: Drive the design and implementation of robust, scalable web applications using modern JavaScript frameworks (Vue 3) and backend technologies (Python/Flask/FastAPI), and contribute to system architecture decisions and technology selection.
- Feature Leadership: Lead development efforts for new features and improvements to existing applications, ensuring high-quality code and architectural integrity.
- Mentorship: Serve as a technical mentor and coach, actively leveling up the engineering team through rigorous code review and the championing of best-in-class development practices.
- Complex Problem Solving: Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues across the full development stack.
- API & Integration Work: Implement and maintain RESTful APIs that interface with various internal and external services.
- Agentic Practice: Help define how this team uses AI coding agents — the review standards, the guardrails, and the boundaries around our 'system of record' data — and keep architectural integrity intact as throughput goes up.
- Quality & Reliability: Ensure application security, performance, and reliability through proper testing methodologies.
- Continuous Improvement: Explore and experiment with new features and best practices in Vue, Python, and related frameworks to keep our products at the cutting edge.
- Agile Execution: Participate in agile development processes, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, and retrospectives.
- Documentation: Develop and maintain documentation for code, APIs, and system architecture.
What You Bring
- The "Startup Mindset": You are comfortable with autonomy, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and are willing to wear multiple hats.
- Depth of Craft: You have 5+ years ideating, building, designing, and maintaining web applications, and you take pride in producing high-quality deliverables.
- Technical Command: You know Vue or an equivalent JavaScript framework and Python with FastAPI, Flask, or an equivalent framework well enough to make - and defend - architectural calls.
- Agentic Judgment: You have real experience directing AI coding agents on production code, and clear opinions about where they earn their keep and where they don't. You review generated code as rigorously as human-written code — arguably more.
- Demonstrated Passion: You have a real drive to continually learn and master the latest advancements in JavaScript (Vue) and Python frameworks, and you want to build an intuitive, innovative web experience.
- Multiplier Effect: You have mentored developers and led technical projects, and you measure your impact partly by how much better the team around you gets.
- Intentional Curiosity: You research, prototype, and share new techniques or tools that improve our codebase and our collective knowledge, rather than keeping what you learn to yourself.
- Collaborative Execution: You work effectively across functions, translate business requirements into technical solutions, communicate openly, and take feedback constructively, even under pressure.
- Detail Discipline: You have a sharp eye for details, catch issues before they become problems, and maintain high standards of accuracy without losing sight of broader goals.
- Love of Data: Our software platform is built around critical, 'system of record' data, so you need to be comfortable reasoning about data models, integrity, and the trends or gaps in a data set.
- Industry Context: Experience in Real Estate Tech (PropTech) or Mortgage and Real Estate Brokerage is highly preferred; experience in the Title Insurance & Escrow/Closing industry would be amazing.
