At Koala Health, our mission is to make managing your pet’s health simple and enjoyable. We’ve built an innovative online pharmacy that delivers pet medications and supplements in presorted pouches, directly to customers’ doors. As we continue to expand, we’re strengthening our financial infrastructure to support accurate reporting, scalability, and compliance.
We’re seeking a hands-on Staff Accountant to support Koala Health’s accounting operations and help bring key financial close activities in-house as the company scales. Reporting to the Controller, this role will own and support core month-end close activities, balance sheet reconciliations, and day-to-day accounting processes, while working closely with our FP&A Analyst and external accounting partners during the transition.
The Staff Accountant will be responsible for executing and maintaining core accounting processes, with a primary focus on month-end close, journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, cash and bank tie-outs, payroll reconciliations, inventory accounting, and accounts payable support. The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, analytical, and comfortable independently owning recurring deadlines, investigating discrepancies, building processes from scratch, and improving workflows in a fast-paced startup environment.
This is a remote position, with occasional travel to our Boston HQ.
Core Responsibilities
Support day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, vendor payments, Ramp, employee expense reimbursements, and corporate credit card reconciliations.
Prepare and post monthly journal entries, accruals, and other recurring accounting entries as part of the financial close.
Prepare cash and bank tie-outs and maintain balance sheet reconciliations, including inventory, accounts payable, fixed assets, manufacturer rebates, and other key accounts; investigate and resolve discrepancies.
Own assigned month-end close activities and support the broader closing process under the Controller’s direction, ensuring schedules, reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting documentation are accurate, complete, and ready for review by established deadlines.
Partner with the Controller and external accountants to transition financial close activities in-house and ensure transactions are appropriately recorded and classified in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
Maintain accounting schedules, close documentation, and records to support accurate financial reporting, internal controls, and audit readiness.
Prepare and support inventory reconciliations and related accounting entries, working cross-functionally to resolve differences between operational and financial records.
Prepare payroll reconciliations and related journal entries and investigate discrepancies.
Partner with external accountants, tax advisors, and internal stakeholders to resolve accounting and tax-related issues as needed.
Track recurring accounting and close deadlines to ensure deliverables are completed accurately and on time.
Prepare and review sales tax reconciliations and support related filings in partnership with external advisors and third-party providers.
Support recurring business and employee-related tax and compliance filings, including items such as Form 720/PCORI fees and other required federal, state, and local filings, in partnership with HR & Controller.
Respond to accounting and payment-related questions from employees and internal stakeholders.
Identify discrepancies, research issues, and drive items through resolution.
Develop and maintain documentation for accounting and financial close workflows.
Identify opportunities to automate and improve accounting processes, internal controls, documentation, and operational efficiency, including through effective use of AI and automation tools.
Partner closely with the Controller and FP&A Analyst to ensure actuals are complete and accurate, and support ad hoc accounting and finance projects as needed.
Basic Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
2 - 4 years of accounting experience, ideally including meaningful month-end close experience within a growing business or public accounting environment.
Strong understanding of accounting fundamentals and U.S. GAAP.
