Description

The International Scholar (ITS) seeks detail-oriented, analytical candidates with excellent writing and editing skills to join the Editorial Division as Staff Editors.

The Editorial Division oversees all editing, production, and publishing for ITS — most notably overseeing Global Analytico, ITS’ digital Periodical of International Affairs. Staff Editors will report to Senior Editors and the Editor-in-Chief, who oversee the editorial process and provide training and feedback. Successful candidates will have a robust background and strong interest in international affairs, demonstrate a commitment to ITS’ Vision and Mission, and have excellent editorial and communication skills.

[Please note that at this time, ITS is a 100% volunteer-based organization, and unable to provide financial remuneration. This is an unpaid, part-time position.]

Responsibilities

  • Comprehensive editing of written content, including:
  • Copy-editing, line-editing, and fact-checking;
  • Structural editing and argumentative critique; and
  • Narrative editing (style, flow, etc.);
  • Coordinate with Senior Editors and other editorial staff to prioritize and edit article submissions for timely publication:
  • Achieve a 14-day turnaround for standard articles; and
  • Expedite time-sensitive pieces as appropriate;
  • Meet with ITS staff authors (virtually) to provide critical feedback, clarify edits and comments, and respond to questions;
  • Correspond with all authors to carry pieces from the first draft to final draft; and
  • Support special projects of the Editorial Division (article series, highlights, quarterly publications, etc.).

Additional Opportunities

  • All ITS Staff may publish in Global Analytico, and receives writing training and support;
  • Staff Editors may also be granted the opportunity to write a regular column on some area of expertise, issue, or region (in coordination with the Editorial Division);
  • Staff Editors may be invited to join The World in Perspective Podcast from time to time to discuss issues on which they have particular competence; and
  • As ITS expands, Staff Editors may be presented with opportunities to support publication in additional languages.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Must have or be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in International Affairs/Relations/Studies, Political Science, or other applicable discipline;
  • Significant work or study experience may be considered in lieu of a degree;
  • A strong interest in exploring topics related to international affairs, law, public policy, economics, security, and related disciplines;
  • Excellent editorial and writing skills;
  • Excellent communication skills & ability to work efficiently in a remote environment;
  • Capacity to work well with a multicultural team;
  • Flexibility to work to meet editorial demand (within reason); and
  • Native or near-native fluency in English.

Desirable

  • Experience writing and/or editing opinion, editorial, analysis, or other publications relating to some area of international affairs or related discipline(s);
  • Experience working with an editorial team or other editors to publish articles;
  • Experience working with Squarespace and/or WordPress websites;
  • Familiarity with Trello and/or Airtable;
  • Familiarity with and access to Adobe Photoshop; and
  • Fluency in a second language (especially Spanish, French, Chinese, or Arabic).

Additional Information

  • All staff have access to ITS events, training, and other staff resources.
  • This position requires approx. 5-10 hours a week on average (fluctuating around major deadlines), and allows for flexible work hours and scheduling.

  • ITS is willing to provide Staff with a letter of recognition for work experience, or other documentation to support accreditation.

  • A Resumé (1-2 Pages);

  • A writing sample of whatever you consider your best written work (ideally of a periodical-style piece) no longer than 5 pages; or
  • An editing sample highlighting your editorial work on someone else’s piece.

(If you decide to provide an editing sample, provide the initial draft that you received and the final draft on which you worked, showing all comments and tracked changes.)
