About PreScalar

PreScalar is building the most advanced automated test platform, solving problems from early R&D all the way to full-scale factory solutions. We specialize in functional testing of hardware subsystems at production volume, for products that combine electronics, firmware, and software.

Our customers span autonomous vehicles, robotics, defense, and medical systems.

About the Role

As a Staff Electrical Engineer, you will own the electrical design of PreScalar’s test platforms and serve as a technical lead with our customers, adapting those platforms to their products and turning what we learn into our next generation of SKUs.

You’ll work from our San Francisco office and alongside customers that include some of the leading hardware companies in the world. You’ll be on scoping calls with customer engineering teams, on the floor at their sites during bring-up, and at the bench in our lab turning their requirements into instrumented, deployable test systems. The pace is dynamic: one day you’ll be probing a customer’s DUT on a scope, the next you’ll be designing PreScalar’s next-generation hardware.

You will be introduced to a plethora of different technologies and implementations of technologies so a thirst for knowledge is required for this job!

What You’ll Do

  • Design and build automated test systems for manufacturing lines and field deployment (robotics, AV, advanced hardware)
  • Own the electrical architecture of our test platforms: power distribution, signal conditioning, switching/multiplexing, and instrument integration
  • Design schematics and PCBs for interface boards, load boards, and custom test hardware, and take them through review, fab, and bring-up
  • Select and specify the right test equipment for each application: power supplies, electronic loads, DMMs, oscilloscopes, DAQs, SMUs, switch matrices, and protocol analyzers
  • Design wiring harnesses, cabling, and electrical interfaces between our platform and customer DUTs
  • Lead technical conversations with customers: scope requirements, review DUT schematics and test specs, and translate them into a test plan and system design
  • Act as the on-site technical lead during installation, bring-up, and troubleshooting at customer facilities
  • Write Python test sequences and instrument drivers to automate measurements
  • Create schematics, BOMs, wiring diagrams, and system documentation that customers and our team can build and maintain from
  • Own full build lifecycle: design > build > bring-up > validate in our SF lab > deploy at customer sites
  • Feed recurring customer needs back into PreScalar’s product roadmap

What We’re Looking For

  • 11+ years of electrical engineering experience, ideally designing test systems or hardware for manufacturing environments
  • Strong EE fundamentals: analog and digital circuits, power electronics, signal integrity, grounding, and noise
  • Hands-on at the bench: comfortable soldering, reworking boards, building harnesses, and debugging hardware end-to-end
  • Deep knowledge of test and measurement equipment, and sound judgment on which instrument fits a measurement (accuracy, bandwidth, isolation, channel count, cost)
  • Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (Altium, KiCad, or similar)
  • Proficiency in Python (test control, instrument control via SCPI/VISA, automation)
  • Customer-facing experience: able to run a technical meeting, scope a project, and earn the trust of a customer’s engineering team
  • Clear written and verbal communication; able to explain technical tradeoffs to engineers and non-technical stakeholders alike
  • Experience deploying hardware into production or operational environments

Relevant experience (one or more)

  • Robotics, consumer electronics, medical device, automotive, aerospace, etc.
  • Vehicle or embedded comms: CAN, EtherCAT, Serial, Automotive Ethernet
  • In-circuit (ICT), functional (FCT), end-of-line, or HIL test systems
  • Field applications, solutions engineering, or other customer-facing technical roles

Nice to have

  • Microcontroller/firmware programming
  • OpenHTF or similar test frameworks
  • High-voltage, battery, or motor drive testing
  • Familiarity with safety and compliance standards (UL, IEC, EMC pre-compliance)
  • Data visualization

Why Join PreScalar

  • Real ownership on a small team, with a direct line to the founders.
  • Exposure to a wide range of frontier companies across Silicon Valley, across autonomous vehicles, robotics, defense, and medical systems.
  • Work on hardware that ships: autonomous vehicles, robotics, defense, and medical systems.
  • Variety: every customer brings a new product, a new floor, and new problems to solve.
  • Shape the product and the FDE function itself as one of our first hires in the role.
