Job Description
We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer, Data with 8+ years of experience designing and building reliable, scalable data platforms. This is a senior technical role for someone who can set architectural direction, solve complex data engineering problems, and remain hands-on in critical parts of the platform.
You will lead the design and evolution of batch and migration of data systems, large-scale processing frameworks, and cloud data warehouse solutions across GCP and AWS. You will work closely with backend engineers, analysts, product teams, and other technical leaders to make high-quality, trusted data available across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical direction and architecture: Define and evolve the architecture for scalable data platforms, pipelines, and analytical data systems. Make sound design choices around reliability, performance, cost, security, and maintainability.
- Pipeline engineering: Design and build resilient batch and streaming pipelines using Python, SQL, and distributed processing frameworks. Set engineering standards for retries, idempotency, observability, and failure recovery.
- Cloud data platforms: Lead the design and operation of data solutions on GCP and/or AWS, using services such as BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Dataflow, S3, Redshift, and Glue.
- Data modeling and transformation: Establish maintainable, version-controlled, and testable transformation practices using dbt and other appropriate tools. Guide the development of analytics-ready data models.
- Data ingestion: Design ingestion patterns for SaaS applications, databases, and other sources. Use tools such as dlt where appropriate, and establish standards for schema changes and source reliability.
- Large-scale processing: Design, develop, and optimize Apache Spark workloads using PySpark or Scala. Diagnose performance bottlenecks and improve processing efficiency at scale.
- Orchestration and delivery: Guide workflow orchestration, monitoring, and error handling with tools such as Apache Airflow. Improve CI/CD practices, automated testing, and release processes for data systems.
- Data quality and governance: Define practical approaches to data validation, lineage, schema evolution, access control, and secure handling of data.
- Technical leadership: Lead design reviews, mentor engineers, raise the quality of technical decisions, and help teams resolve complex cross-system problems.
- Cross-functional partnership: Work with backend, analytics, product, and business teams to translate data needs into reliable platform capabilities and clear delivery plans.
- Operational ownership: Establish service health measures and support practices for critical data systems, including incident response, root-cause analysis, and prevention of recurring issues.
Experience and Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience in software or data engineering, including substantial hands-on work building production data systems.
- Demonstrated experience designing and operating scalable data platforms or distributed data processing systems.
- Strong programming skills in Python and SQL.
- Practical experience with Apache Spark using PySpark or Scala.
- Experience with at least one major cloud platform—GCP or AWS—and its data services.
- Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow and modern CI/CD practices.
- Experience developing data models and transformation workflows; familiarity with dbt is preferred.
- Experience building ingestion frameworks for APIs, SaaS platforms, databases, or event streams; familiarity with dlt is preferred.
- Strong understanding of data quality, schema evolution, lineage, security, and production reliability.
- Ability to lead technical design across teams, mentor engineers, and communicate trade-offs clearly.
- A track record of balancing hands-on delivery with longer-term technical direction.
