About Us

Epia Neuro is a neural technology company developing intent-driven systems that restore function and independence for people living with neurological conditions. Our platform integrates implantable neural interfaces, adaptive algorithms, and assistive devices to translate neural intent into real-world action. Our initial focus is stroke-related motor impairment, with planned expansion into cognitive decline and other neurological disorders.

The Role

We're looking for a Staff Mobile Software Engineer who is passionate about building beautiful, intuitive mobile applications. You'll lead the development of our patient- and clinician-facing applications, creating the interfaces through which people interact with our implantable brain-computer interface and soft robotic glove.

This is a hands-on engineering role combining strong technical expertise with exceptional attention to user experience. You'll own application architecture and implementation, working closely with UX designers, engineers, clinicians, and researchers to turn complex medical technology into simple, reliable applications that meet the expectations of a regulated medical device.

Location

This role is based out of the San Francisco Bay Area and expected to work on site from our Alameda headquarters 2-3 days a week.

What You’ll Do

Mobile Application Development & Product Experience

  • Lead the architecture, development, and delivery of our patient- and clinician-facing Android applications.

  • Build beautiful, responsive mobile interfaces with exceptional attention to visual quality, interaction design, performance, and usability.

  • Collaborate with UX designers to turn designs and prototypes into polished applications, contributing to product and interaction design decisions.

  • Work with clinicians, researchers, and patients to understand their needs, prototype solutions, and refine applications through feedback.

  • Design for accessibility, particularly for people with motor impairments.

  • Develop interactive visualizations of streaming neural, computer vision, and robotic glove data.

  • Integrate applications with connected medical devices, cloud services, and backend APIs, ensuring reliable performance and graceful handling of connectivity issues.

Technical Leadership & Regulated Delivery

  • Set the technical direction for our user interface applications, establishing secure architecture, reusable UI components, and engineering practices that support safety, testing, and maintainability.

  • Collaborate across software, hardware, research, and clinical teams to integrate applications with our broader medical-device system.

  • Develop software within our regulated quality management system and software lifecycle, contributing to requirements, architecture, verification, and documentation consistent with ISO 13485 and IEC 62304.

  • Partner with quality, regulatory, and clinical teams to meet applicable safety, usability, and regulatory requirements.

  • Guide external contributors to maintain consistency in architecture, implementation quality, and user experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience, including substantial hands-on experience shipping mobile applications.

  • Strong proficiency in Kotlin or React Native, with experience building and shipping production Android applications.

  • Demonstrated ability to build visually polished, responsive mobile interfaces and translate UX designs into production-quality applications.

  • Strong understanding of mobile architecture, interaction patterns, performance, maintainability, and automated testing.

  • Experience integrating mobile applications with backend APIs, cloud services, or connected devices.

  • Experience shipping software in a regulated, safety-critical, or quality-managed environment, or within a rigorous, documented development process.

  • Strong product judgment and communication skills, with the ability to own complex technical problems and collaborate across disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with connected devices, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), real-time communication, or complex data visualizations.

  • Experience developing medical-device, digital-health, or other safety-critical software.

  • Familiarity with IEC 62304, FDA software development expectations, or documentation supporting regulatory submissions.

  • Experience with human-factors engineering, usability testing, or accessibility standards such as WCAG.

  • Familiarity with secure software development and medical-device cybersecurity requirements.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work on site, including hands-on testing with prototype devices and participation in bench and integration sessions.

How We Work

  • We are intentional. We prioritize and are thoughtful about how we use others’ time.

  • We care for others. We prioritize safety both for patients and one another.

  • We own outcomes, not just tasks. Our work demands the highest standards because it impacts real patients and real lives.

  • Humility is a strength. We are honest about what we know and what we don’t know. Getting it right matters more than being right.

Benefits

Full-time employees are eligible for the following benefits listed below.

  • Competitive base salary with equity

  • 100% of healthcare coverage for you and your dependents

  • Generous vacation policy

  • Paid parental leave

  • Work from our beautiful waterfront office in Alameda, CA, with access to collaborative spaces and labs.
