About The Opportunity
We’re looking for a Staff Product Designer to lead the experience design for our restaurant robotics products as part of Wonder’s Robotics team (Spyce). This role centers on R&D for 2–3 new automation products targeted for store pilots in 2027. You will also manage and mentor our existing Makeline designer, empowering them to drive the Infinite Makeline while partnering closely across our broader robotics portfolio.
This is a deeply hands-on design execution role focused on interaction craft, prototyping, and end-to-end workflow design for human-robot interactions. Partnering closely with Product Management, you will translate strategic roadmaps and priorities into intuitive, high-fidelity physical and digital experiences for store team members.
While the hardware structures for these products are mostly established, the software interfaces and digital behavior remain highly flexible. You will leverage your understanding of hardware constraints to know what is feasible to adapt digitally and what requires physical workarounds.
As the Staff Product Designer, you will set design direction, lead through influence, and provide clear, actionable specifications for front-end engineers and designers to build and test against. You are expected to be extremely hands-on, rapidly creating prototypes and executing user testing to validate concepts directly on the kitchen floor.
The Impact You Will Make:
- Lead R&D Experience Design: Define and establish the interaction model, software UI, and operational workflows for new robotic kitchen products targeted for store pilots in 2027.
- Hardware & Software Workflow Integration: Map out end-to-end user journeys that marry physical hardware constraints with flexible software behaviors to create intuitive, efficient staff workflows.
- Rapid Prototyping & Restaurant Testing: Design, build, and run quick, pragmatic user testing loops with prototype systems and operators to gather feedback fast.
- Direction & Technical Alignment: Provide clear, structured design specs, interaction patterns, and instructions to front-end engineers and designers to ensure high-fidelity execution.
- Leadership & Systems Thinking: Serve as a design authority working cross-functionally with product managers, engineers, and operations teams to balance ideal user experience with technical feasibility.
What You Bring to the Table
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Interaction Design, Industrial Design, or a related field.
- 8+ years of experience in product design, interaction design, or UX design, with demonstrated experience designing for physical/digital (HMI or hardware-software) systems.
- Deep expertise in workflow design and interaction design involving physical products or environments—not strictly digital/screen-only interfaces.
- Prior experience managing, mentoring, and leading direct reports.
- Proven track record of fast, effective user testing and rapid prototyping in real-world or simulated operational environments.
- High proficiency in Figma and prototyping tools (interactive digital prototypes, physical workflow mockups, or hardware/software simulation tools).
- Strong technical fluency to partner with product, software, robotics, and mechanical/hardware engineers, with a track record of handing off clear design direction to front-end developers.
- A self-directed systems thinker who thrives in early-stage ambiguity, expertly guiding cross-functional partners from concept to deployment.
This role requires 4 days a week in the office. You're welcome—and encouraged—to be in the office up to 5 days a week if it works for you.
This role is based in our Boston office in Charlestown, MA
Massachusetts: $162,000 - $170,000 per year.
