Staff Software Engineer

Set the technical direction for the engine behind grid intelligence, from raw sensor data to the ratings that utilities act on.

We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our LineRate team and set the architecture and technical strategy for the systems that turn massive time-series sensor data into the ratings our utility customers rely on. You will work across the ratings generation library, our customer-deployable product, weather modeling tools, and the front end visualizations that surface it all, and you will raise the technical bar for the engineers around you. What will you do?

Core Responsibilities and Key Performance Objectives

• Develop the technical architecture for the ratings generation library and its microservice, the slimmed-down customer-deployable product, weather modeling tools, and front end visualizations, and keep those codebases coherent as they grow.
• Partner with data scientists to set the path from research code to reliable, scalable production services, and develop reusable frameworks that make that path faster for the whole team.
• Work with UI/UX and Product to design the APIs and data contracts that surface the right data at the right time.
• Design storage and retrieval strategies for massive time-series data sets, and own the tradeoffs on cost, latency and accuracy.
• Lead complex, multi-team technical initiatives from scoping through delivery, and guide teams through execution.
• Influence roadmap priorities with Product and Engineering leadership, weighing customer benefit against time to implement and long-term technical cost.
• Coach engineers through design reviews, code review and pairing, and build programs that grow the team’s technical capability.
• This role requires participation in a compensated rotational on-call schedule. On-call responsibilities are a condition of employment for this position.

Within the first 3 months:

• Learn how the ratings library, customer product, weather modeling and front end connect, and ship a meaningful contribution to at least one of them.
• Build working relationships with Data Science, UI/UX, Product and engineering peers.
• Deliver a written assessment of current architecture, with the top technical risks and opportunities ranked by customer impact.

Within the first 6 months:

• Lead the design and delivery of an initiative that spans multiple codebases or teams.
• Propose and drive a concrete improvement to how we store or retrieve time-series data at scale.
• Bring a clear technical point of view to roadmap discussions and influence the decisions that come out of them.

Within the first year:

• Be the recognized technical authority for at least one core codebase and make the architectural decisions that others build on.
• Lead a cross-functional initiative with Data Science, UI/UX or Product from scoping through delivery, and answer for its outcome.
• Coach multiple engineers, and put in place at least one practice or program (design review process, onboarding guide, shared frameworks) that raises how the whole team works.

Essential Skills

• Expert proficiency in Python and JavaScript/TypeScript, with strong experience in React.
• Proven experience designing and evolving systems with at least one relational database and one NoSQL database.
• Experience deploying and operating production systems on a major cloud platform.
• Track record of setting architecture across the stack, from data storage through APIs to UI.
• Experience leading technical initiatives across multiple engineers or teams, and mentoring other engineers.

• Experience with Kubernetes.
• Experience with Rust.
• Experience designing large-scale time-series data systems.
• Background working closely with data science or applied science teams to productionize research code.
• Experience building engineering practices or programs that scaled beyond your own team.

Reporting & Team Structure

• Reports to the Senior Software Engineering Manager
• Collaborates closely with Data Science, UI/UX, and Product teams, and acts as a technical lead and mentor for engineers on the LineRate team.
