Staff Software Engineer – Technical impact across Coop

At Coop, we build digital products used by millions of customers and members every day. We are looking for an experienced Staff Software Engineer who wants to combine hands-on development with technical leadership, and who enjoys helping teams build robust solutions and make sound technical decisions. You will have broad influence across teams and products while staying close to the technology and the craft of software development.

About The Role

You will be part of a product team while also contributing across teams when challenges call for a broader perspective. Together with other Staff Engineers, you will help set technical direction, create strong shared solutions, and be a trusted sparring partner for engineers and teams. The role does not include formal people-management responsibility.

What You Will Work On

• Drive architecture and system design that keeps our solutions scalable, secure, and easy to evolve.
• Contribute hands-on to development and problem-solving when complex challenges need practical solutions.
• Mentor and coach engineers and strengthen technical collaboration within and across teams.
• Solve cross-cutting challenges involving integrations, networking, and infrastructure.
• Improve technical standards, tools, and ways of working that make our engineering environment more effective and reliable.
• Work closely with product, design, and other disciplines, keeping customers and users at the centre.
  
  
  

Who are we looking for?

We believe you bring extensive software engineering experience, ideally 10+ years, and have developed sound judgement through both successful deliveries and lessons learned along the way. You enjoy sharing that experience and helping others succeed.

What we believe you need to succeed

• The ability to balance technical quality, delivery speed, and business needs
• Experience designing, developing, and operating scalable and secure systems.
• A strong understanding of networking, infrastructure, integrations, and communication in distributed systems.
• Strong programming skills and confidence when making technical trade-offs.
• The ability to create direction and collaboration across teams without needing to have every answer yourself.
• A calm, pragmatic, and flexible approach focused on solutions that work in practice.
  
  
  

It is an advantage if you also have

• Experience with cloud-native development, DevOps, or platform engineering.
• Familiarity with parts of our stack: Golang, Terraform, GCP, Kubernetes, Protocol Buffers, gRPC, and GitHub.
  
  
  

Norwegian is not a requirement, but it is an advantage. If you do not speak Norwegian when you join, we expect you to attend the Norwegian language course we offer and work towards a basic understanding of the language, as Norwegian is the working language outside the IT organisation.
