At Open Universities Australia (OUA), we believe quality education should be accessible to everyone.

For more than 30 years, we’ve helped over 500,000 students take their next step, often during some of the most important moments of their lives. Whether someone is looking to change careers, build new skills or finally pursue something they’ve been thinking about for years, we help make that possible.

When we do our best work, we help change lives every day.

The opportunity

As a Student Advisor, you’ll connect prospective students with education opportunities that could change their future.

This is sales with purpose.

You’ll spend a significant part of your day speaking with prospective students over the phone, including making outbound calls to people who have already expressed an interest in studying.

Your role is to understand what they want to achieve, help them navigate their options and confidently support them towards enrolment.

Like any sales role, you’ll work towards clear goals and targets. The difference is what you’re helping someone achieve. Education can create new careers, build confidence and open new possibilities, so every enrolment has the potential to make a genuine difference.

You don’t need to come from a traditional sales background. What matters most is your ability to connect with people, ask great questions, build trust and help someone make an informed decision about their future.

What you’ll be doing

Your day will be centred around helping prospective students turn their interest in study into action. You’ll:

  • Make outbound calls to prospective students who have expressed an interest in studying
  • Have purposeful conversations to understand their goals, motivations and circumstances
  • Recommend and explain suitable study options
  • Confidently guide prospective students through their decision-making journey
  • Support students through the enrolment process and help remove barriers along the way
  • Connect with students across phone, email and chat
  • Work towards individual and team sales goals
  • Collaborate with your team, share knowledge and continually improve the student experience

You won’t be expected to know everything on day one. You’ll complete a structured training program to build your knowledge, confidence and sales capability, with ongoing support from Capability Coaches, leaders and your team.

What we’re looking for

There isn’t one type of person who makes a great Student Advisor.

You might already work in sales or a contact centre. You might come from retail, hospitality, healthcare, education or another customer-facing environment. Or you may bring your own experience of study and understand what it’s like to balance education with work, family and everything else life brings.

What matters is the experience and perspective you bring and how you use it to connect with others.

You’ll thrive in this role if you:

  • Enjoy talking to new people and are comfortable spending a significant part of your day on the phone
  • Can build rapport quickly and ask thoughtful questions
  • Enjoy working towards goals and sales targets
  • Can confidently guide and influence someone towards a decision that is right for them
  • Bring empathy, curiosity and a solutions-focused mindset
  • Communicate clearly and confidently, both verbally and in writing
  • Are comfortable using technology and learning new systems
  • Are adaptable and resilient and can stay motivated when conversations don’t always lead to an enrolment
  • Want to keep learning and developing your skills

Previous sales experience can be helpful, but it isn’t essential. We can teach you our systems, products and approach. What is harder to teach is curiosity, empathy, drive and a genuine desire to help people move forward.

You’ll also need to be available to work on a rotating roster between Monday and Saturday, with occasional Sunday shifts at the end of each quarter.
