The State Controller's Office (SCO) is seeking to hire a Certified Law Student Assistant to work in its Legal Office. SCO's Legal Office provides critical advisory and protective services regarding California’s financial resources. The Legal Office's core responsibilities include, but are not limited to, Statutory Compliance, Policy and Litigation Advice and Unclaimed Property Enforcement.

In this role, the student assistant will participate in supervised legal research and writing, document review analysis and editing for compliance with administrative and legal authorities. The student assistant will draft meeting notes, discussion outlines, and proposed agendas and represent SCO at hearings under legal supervision. The Certified Law Student Assistant will also learn legal research and writing and how to synthesize and verbally communicate complex legal matters in an efficient and concise manner.

The internship will allow the student an opportunity to gain effective communication, critical thinking, professional etiquette, and analytical skills.

Employment

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California throughout the course of employment.

Prerequisites

Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. Students must be enrolled in at least: 12 semester units or 12 quarter units for undergraduate students; eight-semester units or eight quarter units for graduate students.

Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting and students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
.

Majors/Fields of Study

Law, Political Science, Psychology, Criminal Justice, English, History, Philosophy, Public Policy, Public Administration, Economics or Communications.

Work Schedule

Hybrid work schedule. Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday – Friday, between 8 AM – 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.

Additional Work Schedule

Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Monday - Friday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).

Compensation

$18.00 - $26.00 per hour.

  • Strong communication skills, including active listening and the ability to prepare clear and concise emails, memorandums, and reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external parties and convey complex information in a correct, clear, and professional manner.
  • Ability to adapt and remain flexible in response to changing workloads and priorities.
  • Demonstrates initiative and self-motivation, including taking ownership of projects and maintaining a positive professional attitude.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, including the ability to analyze situations, evaluate data, and draw sound conclusions.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize workload effectively, maintain strong organization, work under pressure and time constraints, and remain proactive and adaptable.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of public administration, executive & organizational communication, purpose-driven writing and editing that is clear, concise, and accurately explains the complexity and services of the SCO.
  • Ability to complete deadline-driven project management assignments and translate complex financial and government information into plain language for diverse audiences.

Duties and Responsibilities

Learning Objective:

  • The Certified Law Student will learn legal research and writing. How to synthesize and verbally communicate complex legal matters in an efficient and concise manner.

Administrative & Organizational Duties

  • Draft meeting notes, discussion outlines, and proposed agendas.

Research & Data Gathering

  • Supervised legal research and writing. Document review analysis and editing for compliance with administrative and legal authorities.
  • Represent SCO at hearings under legal supervision.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Provide attorney's verbal briefings of written matters and implement legal office administrative functions.

Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a hybrid environment.

Students/Employees will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI Work from Home Agreement. The decision to permit an employee to work from home is at the discretion of the supervisor or employer and may, at any time and with or without cause, unilaterally terminate the option to work from home.
