Summer 2027 Resiliency Engineer Intern (Hybrid)

An internship with American Family Insurance is a great opportunity to build your skillset and explore your career interests. Our summer student internship is a 10 to 14 week program that starts in mid to late May and ends in August.

During your internship, you'll work on impactful projects that make a difference at our company, with our customers, and in our communities. You'll also gain exposure to different areas of our business and have numerous opportunities for networking and coaching.

Interns may be eligible for a one-time hiring bonus to assist with housing costs depending upon proximity to an AmFam office location.

Compensation: $25.00

As an intern in the Resiliency Engineering department the role will assist in establishing and maintaining strategies to meet organizational objectives. Under the direction of a senior level employee or manager the individual will work on projects that support the business area goals and results. Completes tasks using both interpersonal and technical skills appropriate to the specific job assignment, while adapting to new or changing situations in a team environment.

Primary Accountabilities

• Develop an understanding of the organization's business environment, technology ecosystem, corporate culture, and operational processes to support engineering initiatives.
• Assist with resiliency engineering efforts focused on improving system reliability, operational stability, and service recoverability.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to identify opportunities for automation and operational efficiency.
• Support the analysis of incidents, performance trends, and service metrics to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
• Participate in projects involving observability, monitoring, capacity planning, disaster recovery, and self-healing automation.
• Assist in developing and maintaining technical documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures.
• Perform analytical and technical work within the assigned functional area under the guidance of experienced engineers.
• Support and plan work on small projects with direction from management.
• Present project outcomes, findings, and recommendations to leadership and department personnel.
• Demonstrate openness to new ideas, technologies, systems, and processes while contributing innovative solutions to business and technical challenges.
• May perform duties normally conducted within the department alongside professionals responsible for resiliency engineering, automation, and operational excellence.
• Other duties as assigned.

Specialized Knowledge & Skills Requirements

• Demonstrated experience providing customer-driven solutions, support, or service.
• Demonstrated analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Must be currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, or a related technical field and be enrolled in an accredited college or university on a full-time basis or as required by the university's co-op program.
• Ideal graduation date: rising seniors with a graduation date of August 2027 to May 2028 preferred.
• Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
• Ability to learn new technologies quickly and effectively collaborate within cross-functional teams.
• Familiarity with one or more programming or scripting languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript, C#, PowerShell, or similar technologies preferred.
• Experience with Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform and/or Datadog a plus.
• Understanding of software development, automation, cloud computing, networking, operating systems, or cybersecurity concepts preferred.
• Experience with academic, personal, or internship projects involving software development, automation, data analytics, artificial intelligence, cloud technologies, or infrastructure engineering preferred.
• Interest in technology resiliency, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), DevOps, cloud engineering, automation, observability, or operational excellence preferred.

Additional Information

• To ensure a strong start, all employees participate in our New Employee Orientation during their first week.  This experience is held in person at our Madison, WI Headquarters or one of our AmFam core locations to help you connect with our mission, meet key team members and build relationships that support your growth.  At times, sessions may be delivered virtually based on scheduling and availability.

This role will be Hybrid work. Work location for this role is Madison, WI.
