About NEMO
New Era Maritime Operations is a forward-looking organisation focused on modernising and optimising maritime operations through technology and data-driven solutions. We are building a state-of-the-art platform for vessel monitoring, alerting, environmental compliance, and performance, with particular care for the data behind it. NEMO invests in robust infrastructure, from shore-side data centres to systems installed aboard vessels at sea, and digital tools that enable reliable services for internal teams and external partners.
The Role
As a System Administrator you will manage and maintain servers, workstations, and core IT systems, ensuring high availability, security, and performance. Daily tasks include monitoring system health, applying updates and patches, managing user accounts and access rights, and documenting configurations and procedures. The role involves providing technical support to employees, resolving hardware, software, and network issues, and escalating complex problems when necessary. The System Administrator will collaborate with IT and operations teams to implement improvements, support maritime-focused applications, and contribute to IT projects and rollouts.
Minimum Qualifications
- A degree in IT, Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
- Strong Linux system administration skills, including managing servers, operating systems and user accounts.
- A solid understanding of networking: IP addressing, routing, firewalls and DNS.
- Strong issue-resolution skills, with the ability to diagnose, resolve and document hardware and software issues.
- Knowledge of security best practices, backups and system recovery.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with virtualisation, cluster management and monitoring tools.
- Scripting in Bash and Python.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and Ansible.
- Familiarity with containers and container orchestration.
- Experience with VPNs, PKI or certificate-based authentication.
- Interest in, or experience with, remote or bandwidth-constrained environments.
Learning Opportunity
You will build and run infrastructure from the ground up across a wide range of environments, from multi-node clusters to standalone systems deployed on vessels. You will design and manage Infrastructure as Code, and gain hands-on experience with software-defined, distributed storage that scales across nodes. You’ll work in a small team where your decisions shape the platform directly.
