Role Overview

Eutelsat is seeking a Systems Engineer to contribute to the specification and development of the mission control and management systems of IRIS² and future satellite constellations. In satellite communications constellations, the mission control centre refers to the software systems that orchestrate the delivery of requested services by planning payload activities and configuring both space and ground assets to execute the mission.

The role spans a wide range of domains and disciplines as the mission management involves the planning of activities and configuration of satellite gateways, spacecraft payload, transport networks and high-level NG-RAN elements. The mission control centre occupies a central position in the ground segment requiring you to interface closely with service and spacecraft operation teams.

Along with the mission control centre team, you will specify the behaviour and oversee their development and verification of a set of custom software components providing these features. In collaboration with suppliers selected for this project you will design and oversee the implementation and integration of this system.

You will help ensure that the mission planning and resource management functions of the system match the needs of both IRIS² and Eutelsat. Satellite constellations operate under a set of complex and coupled constraints; you will help ensure that planning and orchestration processes have appropriate boundaries ensuring the planning processes are both tractable and lead to acceptable system performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the Mission Control Centre procurement process by authoring specifications, conducting supplier assessment as part of RFP and co-engineering processes.
  • Translate system needs into functional designs, associated behaviour and sequencing of the Mission Control Centre.
  • Interface with external consultants and suppliers, integrating their input critically and driving Mission Control Centre needs into the design of other systems.
  • Contribute to end-to-end system design by conducting trade-offs with other subsystems teams to determine functional allocations, interfaces and system architecture.
  • Define mission planning operational concept: planning cycle and dynamicity, planning horizons, failure handling, recovery procedures.
  • Support integration, acceptance and verification in conjunction with IVV teams.
  • Assess and contribute to the design of planning algorithms in collaboration with simulation teams.
  • Design integration of Eutelsat’s commercial systems with IRIS² assets.

Required Experience

  • 5-10 years of relevant professional experience in satellite constellation mission planning and resource management, functional architecture, systems engineering, software design or another relevant field.
  • Master’s degree in engineering, computer science or another technical discipline.
  • Experience in leading technical discussions with external suppliers and partners.
  • Fluent English, written to specification standard.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience on space, telecom or defence programmes with formal review lifecycles (SRR/PDR/CDR).
  • Understanding of modern software deployment and architecture methodologies.
  • Understanding of satellite constellation mission and fleet management.
  • Experience in satellite constellation operations (space or ground), satellite internet services and non-terrestrial networks.
  • Experience in 5G RAN or transport network orchestration, management and control.
  • Experience in software development, data model and schema design.
  • Experience in optimisation and scheduling algorithms and optimisation tools.
  • Familiarity with model-based systems engineering, requirements-management tools or architecture-modelling tools.

Candidate Profile

You are a systems engineer who can reason about a system whose behaviour emerges from the interaction of many parts, across several engineering domains.

You can:

  • Learn across unfamiliar domains, understanding how a planning decision propagates into payload, gateway and network configuration, and how constraints in one domain limit what is achievable in another.
  • Read a scheduling or optimisation approach critically and judge whether proposed behaviour is achievable, without needing to be an algorithm specialist.
  • Specify what a system must do precisely enough to build and verify against, while leaving design freedom on how.
  • Work with operations teams to turn operational needs into technical definitions.
  • Hold a technical position in supplier discussions and RFP assessment.
  • Work with ambiguity in a system still being defined, making and recording decisions where no definitive answer yet exists.
