Position: Tax Compliance Manager (Sales, Use & Property Tax)
Salary: $120,000 - $150,000 Plus Bonus
This is a direct-hire, fully remote role. We will only consider candidates currently residing in the United States for this role.
Position Overview
Our client, a growing, multi-state services organization based in Phoenix, Arizona, is looking for a hands-on Tax Compliance Manager to own state and local tax compliance across a portfolio of operating entities. This is a confidential search, and we will share the company name directly with qualified candidates. The role is roughly 75% multi-state sales and use tax, with annual property tax preparation and oversight of an external income tax advisory relationship making up the rest. Reporting to the VP of Accounting, you will own the tax compliance calendar, the workpapers, and the push toward a more automated, better documented process.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and file multi-state sales and use tax returns across multiple operating entities
- Make and document taxability determinations across states, entities, and transaction types
- Gather and validate transaction data from location-level reports and invoices, including detailed invoice review, to support accurate filings
- Respond to state tax notices and information requests, and support state and local audits as they arise
- Manage state tax registrations for new and acquired entities as the footprint grows
- Prepare annual property tax returns and supporting schedules
- Serve as the primary point of contact with the external income tax advisory firm (a Big 4 firm): coordinate information requests, review deliverables, and keep the annual cycle on track (oversight, not preparation)
- Maintain organized workpapers, filing calendars, and documentation
- Identify and implement process improvements, including automation of data gathering and return preparation
- Communicate proactively with leadership: status updates, deadlines met, risks flagged early, no surprises
Qualifications
- Minimum 5+ years of tax experience with meaningful multi-state sales and use tax exposure
- Hands-on return preparation experience, not just review
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required
- CPA or Master's in Taxation
- Advanced Excel skills; comfortable building and maintaining structured workbooks
- Comfortable pulling and validating data across multiple accounting systems
- Highly organized and self-directed: able to work independently, meet filing deadlines without reminders, and keep leadership informed without being asked
- Experience with tax compliance software (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, or ONESOURCE) is a plus; the current process is manual, and this role will help select and implement tooling
- Comfortable in a dynamic, acquisition-driven, multi-entity environment
Compensation and Benefits
- $120,000 - $150,000 base, depending on experience, PLUS Annual Bonus
- 401(k) / PTO / Paid holidays
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage
- More benefits to be discussed after offer
