Our client is a leading specialist tax law firm in Belgium, recognised for the quality and depth of its tax expertise and for advising a sophisticated domestic and international client base.
As part of the continued growth of the practice, we are conducting a confidential search for experienced lawyers across a number of specialist areas.
The firm offers the opportunity to work on technically challenging, high-value matters alongside highly regarded specialists, with significant exposure to clients and the opportunity to develop a long-term career within a genuinely specialist tax environment.
Opportunities
We are currently interested in speaking with lawyers with experience in one or more of the following areas:
1. Tax Litigation / Tax Disputes
An opportunity for a lawyer with experience in contentious tax matters, including negotiations with tax authorities and tax litigation before the relevant Belgian and international courts and tribunals.
You will:
- Advise clients on complex tax disputes and contentious matters.
- Manage matters from initial analysis through to resolution.
- Conduct detailed research and develop sophisticated legal arguments.
- Represent clients in negotiations and proceedings involving tax authorities.
- Work closely with specialists across other areas of tax and related disciplines.
- Have significant direct interaction with clients and senior members of the practice.
- Contribute to the firm's thought leadership, publications and client seminars.
2. International Personal Income Tax
We are seeking a lawyer with experience advising individuals, executives, entrepreneurs and/or internationally mobile clients on Belgian and international personal income tax matters.
The role will involve exposure to areas such as:
- International mobility and cross-border taxation.
- Personal income tax.
- Structuring and tax planning for internationally active individuals.
- Executive and shareholder taxation.
- International tax questions affecting private clients and their assets.
- Working alongside colleagues specialising in corporate tax, private wealth and estate planning.
This is an excellent opportunity for a lawyer who enjoys technically complex work combined with a strong client-facing element.
3. VAT
An opportunity for a VAT specialist to join a highly regarded specialist tax practice and work on a broad range of Belgian and international indirect tax matters.
The role is likely to include:
- Advising corporate and institutional clients on complex VAT issues.
- VAT structuring and transactional advice.
- Cross-border and international VAT matters.
- Analysis of new legislation and developments in VAT.
- Advising on disputes and interactions with tax authorities where relevant.
- Working on multidisciplinary matters alongside corporate, transactional and other tax specialists.
- Developing client relationships and contributing to technical publications and seminars.
4. Family-Owned Business / Private Wealth
We are also interested in lawyers with experience advising family-owned businesses, entrepreneurs and private clients on the tax aspects of their businesses, investments and succession planning.
Typical matters may include:
- Tax advice to privately owned and family businesses.
- Structuring and restructuring of family-owned enterprises.
- Succession and intergenerational wealth planning.
- Tax aspects of transfers of businesses and assets.
- Advice to shareholders, entrepreneurs and high-net-worth individuals.
- Collaboration with lawyers specialising in estate planning, corporate tax and related areas.
This role would suit someone who combines strong technical tax knowledge with excellent interpersonal and client-management skills.
5. Private Equity & M&A Tax
We are assisting them to recruit lawyers with experience advising on the tax aspects of M&A, private equity and corporate transactions.
You will have the opportunity to work on:
- Domestic and cross-border M&A transactions.
- Private equity acquisitions and disposals.
- Transaction structuring.
- Tax due diligence.
- Acquisition and financing structures.
- Management incentive and shareholder arrangements.
- Post-transaction reorganisations and restructurings.
- Advising sponsors, corporates, management teams and other stakeholders.
The successful candidate will be comfortable working in transaction-driven environments and collaborating with corporate, finance and other advisers.
Candidate Profile
Across the different opportunities, we are interested in lawyers who can demonstrate:
- A strong academic background in law, ideally supplemented by specialist tax qualifications.
- Relevant experience gained within a leading law firm, specialist tax practice, Big Four or comparable professional services environment.
- Strong technical tax knowledge within your chosen area of specialism.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving ability.
- The ability to translate complex legal and tax issues into practical commercial advice.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- A client-focused approach and the confidence to develop trusted adviser relationships.
- The ability to work independently while operating effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Intellectual curiosity, initiative and a genuine interest in developing your expertise.
- Excellent attention to detail and a high level of professional discretion.
- Strong English, together with professional fluency in Dutch and/or French, depending on the role.
Candidates with experience of advising international clients or working on cross-border matters will be particularly relevant.
