Who are Eque2?
Eque2 provides specialist software for the construction and housebuilding sectors, helping businesses manage everything from estimating and financial management to commercial operations and project delivery.
We work with leading platforms including Microsoft, Sage and Xero, helping construction businesses improve visibility, stay in control and manage their operations more effectively. Today, we support over 3,000 construction businesses across the UK and Ireland, from growing contractors to large, complex organisations.
Role Purpose
To own and prioritise the delivery backlog for Eque2’s cloud estimating and cost-control product, translating product direction and validated customer needs into delivery-ready work. You will use AI-enabled development, design and product management tools to accelerate delivery and help build market-leading customer-facing Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities.
About the Role
We are seeking a Technical Product Owner to help shape the next generation of Eque2’s cloud estimating and cost-control software. Reporting to the Chalkstring Product Director, you will own backlog quality, prioritisation and day-to-day delivery decisions within the direction set by Product Management, defining clear requirements and testable acceptance criteria for Engineering and QA.
You will partner with Product Management, Product Design, Engineering and QA from discovery and rapid prototyping through to customer delivery and validation. You will use AI-enabled product, design and development tools to accelerate this process and play a central role in expanding Chalkstring with capabilities from our established EValuate product.
You will engage directly with customers to understand their processes, validate use cases, explore emerging AI opportunities and support acceptance testing, using customer and delivery evidence to inform product decisions.
Location: This is a UK-based hybrid role, with office access in Maidenhead and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Travel is required for team, customer and stakeholder meetings, with office attendance expected 1–2 days per week.
Is this role right for you?
This is a hands-on product delivery role rather than a Product Management position.
You will have authority over the delivery backlog, priorities and day-to-day delivery decisions within the direction set by Product Management. Product Management retains ownership of overall product strategy, roadmap direction, pricing and market positioning.
This role will suit someone who enjoys being close to customers, Engineering and delivery, and who can turn broad product direction and complex customer needs into well-defined work that teams can confidently build and test.
Key Responsibilities
Own and prioritise the delivery backlog within Product Management’s agreed direction, making trade-offs, dependencies and delivery decisions visible.
Turn validated customer needs into delivery-ready epics, stories, workflows and acceptance criteria that Engineering and QA can implement and test without repeated clarification.
Lead refinement and contribute actively to sprint planning and reviews, resolving ambiguity quickly and accepting completed work against agreed criteria.
Engage directly with construction customers to understand estimating and cost-control workflows, validate use cases and edge cases, and support user acceptance and adoption.
Use AI-enabled development, design and product management tools to accelerate research, requirements, prototyping and delivery while maintaining appropriate review, security and data controls.
Identify and validate valuable customer-facing AI opportunities, defining quality thresholds, safeguards, human oversight and evaluation requirements for probabilistic features.
Work closely with Product Design, Engineering and QA on workflows, data models, integrations, APIs, technical constraints and testability.
Measure adoption, quality and customer outcomes; use evidence to guide iteration, priorities and recommendations to Product Management.
Communicate progress, decisions, risks and dependencies clearly, and keep product documentation, release notes, Support and Customer Success briefings current.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Demonstrable experience as a Product Owner, Business Analyst or in a closely related B2B SaaS delivery role.
Practical experience owning and prioritising backlogs within an Agile delivery environment.
A strong track record of translating customer and operational needs into clear user stories, requirements and testable acceptance criteria.
Strong process, workflow and data analysis skills.
Enough technical understanding to discuss APIs, integrations, data and dependencies confidently with Engineering teams.
Hands-on experience using AI tools in areas such as product discovery, analysis, design, requirements or prototyping.
An understanding of the quality, risk and human-oversight considerations associated with customer-facing AI.
Confidence engaging directly with customers and communicating technical and product decisions to different audiences.
An evidence-led, proactive and collaborative approach, with strong attention to detail.
Experience using Jira or a comparable product delivery tool.
Desirable
Construction estimating, quantity surveying or cost control.
EValuate or other construction estimating software.
AI, machine-learning or data-driven product capabilities within complex B2B workflows.
AI prototyping, evaluation or observability tools.
Low-code or no-code platforms or AI coding assistants.
SQL.
API tools such as Postman or Swagger.
Process modelling, including BPMN.
Personal attributes
You are a practical, customer-focused Product Owner who enjoys turning complex operational problems into clear, deliverable outcomes.
You are comfortable getting into the detail with engineers while keeping sight of the customer problem and intended outcome. You ask precise questions, challenge assumptions and identify dependencies early rather than allowing ambiguity to reach Engineering.
You will be:
Curious and evidence-led, using customer and delivery insight to inform decisions.
Proactive and solutions-focused, comfortable resolving ambiguity and moving work forward.
Commercially and technically credible, able to communicate confidently with customers, engineers and senior stakeholders.
Collaborative and adaptable, working effectively across Product Management, Product Design, Engineering and QA.
Quality-conscious, balancing pace and innovation with security, responsible AI use and customer trust.
The successful candidate will be:
Highly organised, detail-oriented and effective at managing time and priorities.
Professional, credible and confident when engaging with senior stakeholders.
Proactive, solutions-focused and able to anticipate needs.
Calm under pressure and adaptable to changing priorities.
Trustworthy, discreet and demonstrates sound judgement.
Collaborative, approachable and service oriented.
A positive ambassador for the organisation’s culture, values and standards.
Measures of Success
Success in this role will be demonstrated through:
Backlog readiness: priority work has a clear outcome, scope, acceptance criteria and dependencies before it reaches sprint planning.
Requirement quality: Engineering and QA can implement and test work without recurring clarification, with requirement-related rework reduced over time.
Delivery predictability: risks, dependencies and material scope changes are identified and communicated early.
Customer validation: priority features are tested with representative customers and validated against defined needs and use cases.
AI quality and safety: customer-facing AI capabilities meet agreed standards for quality, reliability, privacy, security and appropriate human oversight before release.
Adoption and value: released capabilities have clear outcome measures, such as adoption, usage, satisfaction or operational improvement, which are reviewed after launch.
AI-enabled productivity: AI tools demonstrably improve discovery, prototyping or delivery without weakening quality, controls or traceability.
Operational readiness: relevant documentation, release notes and Support and Customer Success briefings are complete before launch.
Our Commitment to Inclusion
We are proud to be an equal opportunities employer, committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, respected and has the opportunity to thrive.
